So, I just found this…
I guess if you have just had an accident and are worried the third party isn’t insured etc you can check it here.

A good reminder, not just for checking out a 3rd party you may be in collision with, but to check out your own policy has been added to the database.
I’ve had to chase up insurers before because my bikes haven’t shown up as being insured & this reminder prompted me to check again, apparently my car currently isn’t on the DB despite me having paid in full for a new policy a couple of weeks ago!
Somewhat worrying as the car lives on the street & is therefore liable to being towed away for being uninsured & as I’m out of the country a fair bit, it could potentially be crushed before I even realise it’s gone! A strongly worded email has been despatched to the Insurance company!
Thanks!
Wouldn’t worry about your car not showing up… it can take a bit of time for the database to be updated. I think the database the police have access to is updated a lot quicker.
As for checking out whether someone else is covered - I presume you’re using the free check? Tut tut, although I can’t see anyone paying £4 for the check when they can get it for free by declaring it’s their own vehicle. Wonder what the punishment is for breaching the Data Protection Act in this way? Not a lot I reckon.
I wouldn’t count on it for accuracy, use it only for guidance. For several months 2 out of 3 vehicles that I owned reported uninsured, and my Honda CBF500/A was reporting as a Toyota Corolla 1.4.
This is actually the site/system the police/dvla use, I was told about this in a letter from the dvla (along with a fine) for have a vehicle taxed and uninsured (even tho it was in my shed in pieces)
I know, which is why it is appalling that such inaccuracies are allowed to happen, it is totally dependant upon the information submitted by the insurance companies. Vehicles can also drop out for no reason. When I came to tax my previous bike it was reported not to be insured and behold according to website it wasn’t. However the following day it was listed as insured.
It is not reliable.
