And the fact that you are not submitting yourself to the flea infested, germ infected great mass of unwashed humanity that glories in cramming into small spaces whilst breathing the same air in a train that has broken down, stopped for technical difficulties, stopped because the station is full, there are leaves on the lines, the driver fell asleep…
I pay that bit more a year to be on a bike and it is worth it any day. I just need to slow down a tad on the commute to avoid being a statistic.
Annual season ticket’s not going to be £3600 if it’s £15 a day.
And you missed out purchase price of a bike before you start saying you can’t afford a season ticket all up front.
But yes, for me it’s £20 train ticket or £6.50 petrol. time is much of a muchness, but more likely to have delays on the train, plus you’re not stuck to a timetable.
Train: season ticket costs about £3500 (including z1-6 travelcard), takes an hour and 45 minutes door to door.
Bike: fuel for a return trip to work costs about £9 and takes an hour and quarter on a good day (not including time getting the bike ready to go or to get changed & try to remove creases) but can take much longer depending on the traffic/roadworks. This doesn’t take into account tyres, servicing, tax, insurance or the risk of my bike being stolen/hit by a bus outside work! Or the fact that it’s freezing cold and wet in the winter…
When you are travelling quite a way to a central London location, public transport makes more sense. Plus I can sleep on the train (unlike on the bike… I stopped commuting to work by bike when I fell asleep on the bike twice in the same week )
And the seat of your bike has probably only ever had your bum on it whereas the seats on the train have had the dirt from the shoes of the filthy pikey scum who seem to believe that it’s perfectly reasonable to put their feet up on the seats.
Plus the grease wiped from their hands after the burger they ate on the journey home, stinking the place out into the bargain. Beats me why the train companies don’t just put hard plastic seats on the tube and suburban commuter trains like on the NY subway, then it would be easier to clean up after the scum-sucking pigs. Aaaaannd exhale. I really have to cut down on coffee.
Bike over train every time except when going out boozing, or the morning after.
