how much to fit headraces?

Just been quoted by my mechanic to have them fitted will take 2 hours.

How much are suzuki headraces (headstock bearings) and how long does it take?

about 40-60 quid and its easy to fit them but you need to suspend the front of the bike in the air from the headstock so you can get the top yokes etc off.

Don’t buy Suzuki ones… Suzuki don’t make bearings, they’re just packed in Suzy packs
As long as you get decent branded bearings you’ll be fine. You should be able to get SKF / NTN / Timken / FAG / Koyo bearings for £30 , maybe less.
Go here and you can get a set for about £20 - and they’re good quality Koyo ones :

hmmm how much all in would a shop charge?

for the suzuki bearings its £75 with the dust seal. whats funny is ive got some people saying have tapers while others say get genuines just adjust properly and tapers can click.

so its a mixed bag

I reckon you’re looking at £150 plus to get the head bearings done at a dealer.
Pure guesswork, mind…

got mine done (on the CBF) for ~150 at Chiswick honda - this was about a year ago

+1 about 150 sounds about the rate

If you have a workshop and a full range of tools, including a hoist or two, they take about two hours for an experienced amateur to change.

Having done the job twice in my life, I rate this as one of the biggest pain in the Arris jobs on a bike.

I’d willingly pay someone to do this job but I’d provide some decent bearings myself for less money than the makers rubbish.

They’re actually not too bad a job to do - biggest arse is getting the inner race off the bottom yoke if it’s been there a while (when I did them on my Slingshot, they’d been there for 17 years and needed an air chisel to get them off)
If you know someone with a slide hammer it makes getting the bearings out of the headstock much easier…

Always get tapers … they will last alot longer before they notch!

+1 Always replace them with Taper Rollers:)

well heres something for you lot. tapers use to be used by the manufactors but they tend to notch in the middle and cause more drag yet roller bearings dont so they changed over and never went back. feel free to say what you like how tapers rule etc but ill take the word of my mech who has 30years of doing this.

its a mixed bag and ive got genuines back in there now as my mechanic doesnt use tapers unless the frame has been repaired

  • 1 for taper bearings i replace the standard ones on the 1st service. :Dthe reason the manufactures use roller bearings comes down to installation time and costs.

Do you do many wheelies?

If so, tapers will be the better option as they handle thrust loads better as they have a greater contact area than ball bearings.

Aye, tapers are a little more tricky to get the tension right with, but once it’s right they last better.
