How much movement in a front brake disc?

I can hear a tapping/clicking noise coming from the front end when braking on my Sprint. Upon inspection there seems to be quite a bit of movement in the outer part of one of the front brake discs, more than the other front disc. I was just wondering how much movement is there supposed to be?

They’re floating discs but shouldn’t move excessively… Can you tighten the rivets that hold the outer disc on to the inner part?

Not sure, how would one go about tightening them?

Hit them with a hammer? Or put a bolt through and tighten a nut against the rivets?

hmm not sure I want to risk hitting my brakes with a hammer, I’d be too worried about damaging anything

Then do this?

Sure its not the headstock bearings?

Calipers torq’d up ?

Yup, checked everything else, the only thing that has any slack is the left brake disc. It definatly moves more than the right hand one, might pop to my local dealer and get them to give it a quick check for me.

i had this on the beamer. it was the rivets holding the floating disc that were worn. i got them replaced and from memory, they were about £5 each (plus fitting).

it should be able to go all the way round.

Maybe you should have done that instead of posting another boring thread.

Triumph discs are notoriously loose. I worried about mine on the Daytona, so bought a low mileage set that turned out to be just as bad. They leave the factory like that.
Couple of other things you could try though… Clean the brakes thoroughly, if one of your pistons is stuck on even slightly it will push one of your discs over a fraction and cause it to click.
Also, if that doesn’t help, then slacken off the pinch bolts on at the bottom of your forks and pump the front suspension aggressively a few times, then retighten the pinch bolts. This ensures the forks are aligned with the discs.
I also discovered that pushing a wide bladed flat screwdriver into the rivets on the brake disc and rotating them slightly lessened the noise.

sorry this thread didn’t live up to your lofty standards…:doze:

Might try rotating the rivets, I don’t mind giving things a go, but I’d rather not try things that could screw it up in any way as I’m not over confident mechanically as much as I would like to be

my money is on a jammed piston pushing the rotor over a touch.

I’ll check it again tomorrow in the daylight, but it doesn’t seem to be, it all moves quite freely.

Oh the Joys of pissing in the wind

Kindly ask that you **** off

Oh yeah er ok mate.

Oh hang on its the, er, ya know, the thingy bit, on the left, near the tyre, yeah yeah thats it… Nah nah sorry got it wrong!
