I find them sometimes uncomfortable with the jacket or is it just me. Anytips to make it more comfortable.
i wear a back protector after smiled told me about his off when the bike landed on his back, i find them good never unconfortable
but never go out without it now, the best 89.99 pounds i spent
I always wear mine even if I am only popping out for 10 mins, I have a knox one, really comfy and don’t know it’s there half the time
yeap wear mine for long rides.
I have 2. One built into my Dianese textile jacket & during the summer, I have a Dainese Safety Jacket Wave 2.
I don’t notice the inbuilt one.
Better be safe than sorry.
Can’t get on with separate ones, though I have a hard one in my summer daninese (sp) jacket that is ok, the one in my textile jacket dug in the back of my head when in the riding position and was so uncomfortable I took it out and just have the silly spongy one in there.
yes they are essential wear but they just dont fit right, I always wear one either in the jacket or a knox individual one…mind you I didnt have it on when I went sliding at brands, only becasue I was rushing to get ready, had it with me just forgot to put it on…silly me…
by your jacket at the same time as the back protector (or take the protector you’re going to use when you’re trying them on)
if you bought without, you may have enough room for it properly making it uncomfortable
the g2 ones in the dainese jackets you dont notice. my big race knox one is a bit of a faff but thats just for track
I’ve been looking into Back protectors and, trying them on in Hein Gericke with my textile stuff they felt horrible and uncomfortable. I guess I’m still going to have to get one though, particularly for long rides.
I wear a back protector 50/50 when road riding - depends on the sortie
Wear it 100% of the time on track
Personally, I have a protector in both my textile and leather jackets. You never know when you are going to need it, short journey or long! I’ve tried a few, but the most comfortable I’ve found is the Forcefield range of armour. They do armour for the whole body, including arious back protectors. I have the slip-in back protectors (make sure you get the corect one for your make of jacket!!) and also the full length protector. All of them eventually mold to the shape of your back, and I forget I’ve even got one fitted!
It’s essential gear, especially after the amount of guys (and girls;))on this forum have told of the doctors famous words “If it wasn’t for that protection you’d be dead!”
RR:D
i have one inbuilt into my dainese jacket and have to say it’s unnoticable. but the size of the plate itself gives me a little bit of a worry. would it be possible to make the pocket bigger so it accomodates a bigger protector? or maybe proper ones have to be worn on straps?
I have a danese (think that how you speel it) on, bought it for £50 on ebay love it but don’t wear it at the moment, mostly because it is lost somewhere in my house.
If anyone does see it please let me know…
Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but if you believe a back protector is going to prevent you from breaking your back you’re sadly deluded !
Yes, I know what people have been told by overworked A&E quacks, but this isn’t my opinion it’s that of Dr Rod Woods the worlds most pre-eminent expert in motorcycle injuries.
He’s a guy who’s dedicated the last few decades into researching bike injuries, their causes (the causes of the injuries, not the accidents themselves) & what can be done to prevent or minimise said injuries by way of clothing, body armour & protective gear. He’s almost single handedly drawn up the Cambridge stds on which the CE stds for bike gear can only aspire to.
I’ve posted this link before, but it may make interesting reading for those that haven’t read it -

"I openly admit that this all came as news to me. I told him all sorts of scenarios - chest injuries from upper body impact : ruptured kidneys from back impact : broken back from back impact - he told me that statistically speaking, they just don’t happen. Back injuries seldom happen to bikers - and those that do would not be prevented by back protectors. “How so ?”, I ask him. Well, statistically speaking, all back injuries in bikers (and they’re few and far between) involve bending or twisting of the back - like when you r shoulder or chin hits the ground hard, with resultant detrimental effects on your back. Back protector won’t help there, pal. He tells me that broken ankles are the most common injury you can imagine. Compare them to broken backs and you’re talking mountains and molehills. Surprising stuff. Time to revise my ideas on protection. "
aye…an interesting read…but…picture this…your lying in the the middle of the road…face down and the impact that you’ve just felt on your back from the tail of your bike slamming into it at 35 mph…would be enough to have busted your spine…
you cant move out of shock…and you realize that a horror of the reality is that things may be real bad …whats going threw your mind?..for me it was…’‘please just let me be ok…please…please…please…let me just be able to wiggle my toes…’’…this is a frightening experience…
but when i did get to A&E…they removed my leathers…and my ‘‘back protector’’…and yes…the doctor did say that this thing had saved my life…as the impact would have certainly left me paralyzed at best…the worst is unbearable to think about…luckily, i escaped with broken ribs…i am thankful for just that…i really am…
and again…with the same piece of amour 3 months later when a van cut across me…pushing me off the bike…and sending me into a curb…flipping me around…and the only thing to stop me from open ground was a solid white post sticking out of the ground…i hit it at around 12-15 mph right across my back…enough to still break a spine and sever the mass of delicate nerve strings tucked into the crevasses…it stopped me dead in my tracks as my ‘‘back protector’’ caught the full force of the impact…and you want to tell me that they don’t do squat?
i have experienced this first hand and will advise anyone and everyone to ride with one…you do get used to it and its like an extra something you don’t have to worry about…
so please…please…if you got one…wear it…if you haven’t got one…i am begging you…get one…after all…how much is your spine worth to you? and could you deal with being numb from the neck down for the rest of your entire life?
its your call…i know which option i am taking…;).
smiled:D.
totally agree… but: back protectors wont stop ALL spinal injuries…
after my off in 2000 - I talked to knox about my injuries… and was told that there was no back protector currently on the market that would have stopped the injury that I have to my spine…
I have a wedge compression to one of my vertebra
(if you can call it a back protector - I did have one in the back of my teknic leathers, but it didnt help at all…)
…saying that - as everyone else recommends - dont leave home without one…
Dr Woods is my boss’s dad. I don’t think he does materials work any more - he retired to breed flowers some time ago.http://plant-quest.blogspot.com/2008/01/motorcycles-lumberjacks-and-rose-of.html
I think chest protectors are really important too for impact protection. All the racers wear them. Been meaning to buy one for ages!
I only wear my back protector if I’m going out for rip. I have the Knox racing one. While it is quite big it’s dead comfy and it feels good to have my coxics (spelling??) covered!
Ankles ooh yes! I have to confess I ride around town far to much in my trainers but I know you can have a slow or even stationary spill and end up with a bike crushing your leg! :w00t:
I didn’t read all of the Doctors work, but road riding and track riding are two different things. Watch the racing each weekend and out of all the accidents, see how many have riders landing on their back, I’d say between 25-50%. Now tell me, would you want to be hitting the ground in those situations without a back-protector? No way Jose!
Also, there’s the issue of layering, they’re another layer to stop your skin wearing off. If you slide along the ground on your back, your leathers won’t last forever, they will wear through, and having a back protector could be the difference between skin-grafts and a sore back.
For the sake of a £100 back protector, I would never risk my body! Wear the best protection you can afford. Your body is worth more than anything else in this world.
Took a little while to get used to but now I never go out without mine. It moulds to your body shape eventually.
Ladies Forcefield back protector - Infinity Motorcycles, don’t know how much it was as was a Crimbo pressie
