Good to see that most people wear them. Sometimes if I’m in a rush I forget to put them in which isn’t good + plus I rode the first few years of my biking life without them - I’m sure my hearing has suffered a bit - I just hope I can arrest any further deterioration through consistent use of ear plugs in the future - I think i’ll get my ears checked just to see what state the hearing is in - blasting my ears with a walkman when I was a teenager probably didn’t help either.
I wear them on long journeys and motorways , its a pain to remember to wear them ,but i had a hearing test the other day and was told im going deaf !.. was even told that a hearing aid might help me !!! :w00t:
I either wear ear plugs or isolating headphones to listen to music. I find that the noise on long journies causes more fatigue in my mind which makes me get tired faster. Madonna on the other hand has the opposite effect.
I just found out from a pre-occupational medical check that my left hearing is about 5-10db down in terms of hearing threshold. Tinnitus is NOT a good ting, and it’s especially bad when you’re still 22! Started wearing earplugs full time when i learnt how noisy an Arai Corsair was! Occasionally i listen to music at low volumes (<50%) for long journeys since good headphones cancel out noise. Ironically, if the earbuds are inserted carefully enough, a fair proportion of the wind noise is removed and works better than the plugs i nicked from work.
I was born with tinnitus - didn’t know I had it until I was 11 and mentioned something to my parents about that whistle you can hear when everything is quiet - they were like: “What whistle?”
I thought it was normal until then!
Been thinking about getting some earplugs even so - don’t wanna make it worse
What’s that places that does assorted packs of ear plugs so you can get the right type? I don’t know what brand I use; just says moldex Purafit Cord? They do the job once all the foam has expanded out. Does anybody have custom fitted ones like what DJ’s and other professionals have?
I regret trying to act like the roodboy sitting on the 32 bus with metal blaring out at full volume… it’s probably the dumbest thing I could be doing to my ears as a teenager; little did i know that riding a bike for 6 years would bring my state of hearing into something that’s equivalent to a gerriatric!
+1
Always. The moment of realisation for me was at a trackday when being told to try them. I did, and went a crap load faster! Felt a lot more comfortable and with the old Gixxer Thou, it was an essential piece of kit, or I’d get a monster headache in no-time at all.
Mate, Madonna, even at 50, would still tire most of us out.
What?
Don’t wear them and never have since I started on my TS50.
TBH, I only recently (last 5 years or so)started buying ‘proper’ biking attire - when I was a lad all you needed was a lid, a bomber jacket and a pair of Doc Martens
i like to hear my 2t go vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom;)
Related funny story: the bloke I bought the 'Bird from gave me a few sets of earplugs with the bike. “Here try these, I nicked them from the steel forge where I work, they are the best you will find!”
Turns out they are absolutely amazing and a few months later I send him a text saying they are fantastic and if he would be able to post me a few more?
A week later the UPS man arrives with a box… I’m like hmmm… surely I didn’t order anything that big from e-bay??
:w00t::w00t::w00t::D:D:D
Those will last me for a while methinks… how he managed to nick them from work is anyone’s guess!
either ear plugs or headphones, always have a spair pair of plugs under my seat or in my jacket and have a little pot of them at work.
JVC Marshmellow Earphones and my IPOD, various tunes and audiobooks.
I always wear ear plugs. I was told that you have to be careful not to get industrial ones that block out too much of the sound – you have to be able to hear the traffic noise, albeit slightly dampened, and protect from the constant wind(!) noise and pressure.
Perhaps I should have typed that in capitals for the HARD OF HEARING!
i modified my sony headphones the type you get with three different size rubber insert with moldex earplugs no wind noise pure quailty music just had works medical earings perfect

Same for me. My HJC helmet on my Aprilia trail is far too noisy. On my son’s Bandit it’s a lot quieter. I think this may be simply a case of how you fit onto different bikes/what angle your head is at when you are settled in.
Interesting how many people use music “buds”. When I posted an appeal for info. on this last year, I mosly got “don’t do it” replies.
Really could have done with some on my own bike yesterday. On my way to my MOT, one of my exhaust baffles dropped out (and got squashed by a lorry while I was waiting to get across the road and pick it up) and the noise was horrible. It must’ve been dreadful to be behind me!
The bike failed its MOT on something else as the lovely bloke at the MOT place bashed the baffle back into enough of a shape that he could hear the bike with the baffle in, but couldn’t ride home with it like that, so got deafened instead. Had a real headache by the time I got home.
