How good is your lid?

I’m a Shoei Neotec flip = 4 stars

3. https://sharp.dft.gov.uk/helmets/arai-chaser/

Funny thing, the worst area for impact on that helmet is EXACTLY where I hit my head when I crashed into the back of a car.

This “test” is very misleading and I would crosscheck it with other tests and certifications helmets have to fulfil on certain markets (this very website was subject of few threads as I remember correctly)

So DOT, ECE and Snell you are looking for. (Helpful link https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2013/04/08/motorcycle-helmet-standards-explained-dot-ece-22-05-snell/)

Yikes, mine is only 3 stars, an HJC RPHA-10 PLUS. It’s quite light at only 1300g, and has fully removable lining. The ventilation is reasonable and the vision is very good.

I will have you know that Halfords helmet (30 quid), got 4 stars… XD!

Not this again…

This will just trigger endless debate of the merit and accuracy of the sharp test.

Next we’ll be advertising gazebos again

Mine is mediocre — the peripheral visibility is limited and the ventilation awful — but it was a relatively cheap with the features I wanted and. importantly for me, it had five stars from SHARP.

Sorry I can't hep myself jajajja

Whilst your halfords comment has provided the lighter fuel, the OP started the fire

3 stars for £370 with my Arai Chaser V. Apparently if I get hit on the side of the head I’m basically a dead man.

4 stars for my £380 SHoei NXR - though i paid £320 for it AND got £50 voucher - can’t complain

5 Stars for my Shoei Qwest. I’m pleased! Not that I want to test it!!

Correct me if i’m wrong, I’ve been wrong before. Didn’t the Halfords £30.00 helmet get a five star SHARP rating?

5 *

Prefer to not test it myself…

Not to start the debate but just for information, Arai helmets never do particularly well in SHARP tests because they design everything to meet Snell standards, and the two schemes having opposing priorities.

Snell tests require more rigid shells as they look for the ability to withstand repeated impacts in the same place.  But in the ECE R22.05 standard, which SHARP extends, flexibility of the shell is more important so that it absorbs more of the impact to reduce the force on the wearer.

A good critical line of Snell I once read is that it is concerned with the protection of the helmet rather than the head inside.  It kind of sums up the difference though.  Both are safer in the specific circumstance on which the tests are based, so just make sure your accidents match your helmet’s strengths.

But that is why Arai tend to rate poorly with SHARP despite the cost.

This is where brand does play a role. I trust Shoei and Arai to protect my head because they’ve been in the game longer than others, and most definitely longer than Halfords. They’ve developed lids alongside their pedigree in motorsport and doubtlessly have infinitesimally more crash and impact data at their disposal.

Could it be that Halfords helmets are good? - yes. Could it be that they are better than Arai and Shoeis - I very much doubt it.

The other thing is that I also buy a lid based on the fit - not just the technical specs. And I found Shoeis fit me better than Arais, and much more comfy than cheap lids I bought.

I fully expected myself to buy an Arai or Shoei when I went out to select a new lid, but the discomfort of lids from both brands lead me to try an AGV. After trying the Veloce GT, I was sold. This is easily the best I’ve had … better ventilation, better fitting and fitting adjustability, quieter noise levels, much better visor (fastening, thickness, pin-lock as standard, tear-off mounts etc), and it’s probably the lightest lid I’ve tried too. For my head, there was simply no contest.

Incidentally, for what it’s worth, and not that I care, it also gets 5* in SHARP testing.

So much for not wanting to trigger the debate!
