home made SOFT pannier rack

Bought myself a welder to make my own rack. Granted I’m fairly shocking at making neat welds (1st time welding) but the rack works well. Its for soft luggage only. Hard luggage is mounted to the rack whereas soft luggage drapes over the bike. I don’t want to scratch the paintwork and the pipes touch the bags which will melt them as I did on the old GSR.

So the rack only needs to make the bags clear those parts

PS, yes you can buy panniers for the King but I’ve removed the exhaust cage when I got the Yoshi’s so the mounting parts are all gone so no manufacturer rack will fit the bike anymore

I might get these some black colour with some hammerite or something but I first need to get some proper bolts and fixings before I actually use it. PS there are only 4 bolts for the entire system and all easy to get to. 5-10min fitting and the rack will only be used on weekends away…which I never do :stuck_out_tongue:

:)Mian would be so proud :stuck_out_tongue:

Nice rack

Oh and the top box is mounted to a spare pillion cover seat that I modified too

Just cant take a pillion when the box is on :stuck_out_tongue:

That has to be strange riding with panniers that are a good foot wider than your handlebars…

have you seen how wide the rest of the bike is? :w00t:

hard luggage would be further out. still aint no GS is it :stuck_out_tongue:

I say fit a spoiler to the rack when luggage isn’t attached

how many points are attached to the bike?

if its just the one at the bottom i would be worried as it will snap in the end.

Very smart! I’m impressed!

Rob will be along soon to provide a critique on your welding and metalwork

More posts like this one on LB please!!!

The bags are really light and a lot of weight is taken up by the straps. I did think of that though and might fabricate another bar now that I know it fits properly.

i have some oxford bags and know they dont weigh alot but with vibrations and speed lol id hate for them to break when your on a trip then you can attach them to get home or they will melt XD

do you reckon you’ll be up for helping me build some hard case racks next year for my ntv XD

i spent alot of time in hospital lookup up on how people have made them and what needs to be done for strength, i even sore someone had made soft racks with a meter m8 threaded bar in some 8mm fule line then bent around looked really good =]

If your in to that sort of thing check out Delboy’s Garage

Wow, a whole 20minutes of video where you get to watch a bloke cutting up old clothes horses… Hahaha

nice one jamie!

I like it. DIYtastic

it’s nice if a little industrial! I would’ve used some lower gauge raw material.

also appears you’ve mounted the bags the wrong way round? the wide end of them should be at the front, matching the shape of the racks.

please bring this to BM so I can have a proper look.

mine was VERY practical. moreso than the standard one I have now.

The bags just flop on. Didn’t know there was a right way forward :stuck_out_tongue:
I’ve always had em on backwards. To be honest, I didn’t even take the bags out until I finished the rack. Even forgot how the bags looked haha.

Ross, you buy e metal and just pay me for the gas and welding wire and you’re welcome to DIY it yourself with a little of my uneducated guidance.

Bang tidy! :satisfied:
