HMMM.....................

Just answered a thread by Wyvern 971 in the Bike Talk section under "Feeling a bit disappointed with…?

But thought i wonder how many others get this in their heads when out on our bikes?, below is my answer to one of the posts: Come on now, be honest…i know im not the only one…guess we are the lucky ones…say this cos just found out a guy that died few weeks ago on his bike was a work collegue…i didnt know as ive just got back from holiday, of course, hes not here anymore…he was 32 and had wife and 2 young kids…i know we all know someone whos died on his/her bike but this post just got me thinking…what IS it that gets into us?

Agree Jim, we really should remember to ride for ourselves, and yes i have been involved in the same thing…guess its part of riding, who knows…but yeh, its happened and keeps happening and every time i tell myself, “stop being a pratt, youre lucky you got away with it”…and then someone tries to give it the big un and off i go again…stupid, stupid stupid…i should know much, MUCH better than that !!!

Sometimes when we hear of an accident on a bike? its caused because of that SAME thinking of the unfortunate rider, who WASNT lucky that day…sobering thought me thinks?

Sometimes, on a rideout? Im all fresh and up for it and take off (like all the others)…and sometimes take the p and am lucky with some of the stoopid things i do…on way home, im less “up for it” and more of a “lets get home in one piece, you can take off as much as you like” mood…THATS when i sit back and look at some of the other riders and what they get up to and tutt tutt in my crash helmet to myself…why i dont know, cos minutes earlier? i was doing the same thing !!!

Worse thing i EVER have done? Got in between a coach and a lorry with the lorry driver not seeing me and starting to change lanes and me half and half between the 2 of em, filtering like a numbnut, and KNOWING its bluddy difficult for a lorry or coach driver to see us on bikes as it is, without one coming up fast behind them and then filtering in their blind spot !!! (what a pratt!) …managed to get in front and look up and saw the blind panic on the poor guys face before i shot off into the sunset, kicking my own ass for being a dumb, dumb, DUMB human being !! (and saying thanks to god for sending my guardian angel out that day)…others, have NOT been so lucky…and have died for lesser stupidness…

Well I am yet to wheelie past a line of traffic past a junction.

I think the stupidest things I have done are;

booting it at the lights when inappropriate

observation needs improving;

  1. was too close to a van, he was turning left, but stopped suddenly because of a cyclist shooting past him on the inside, luckily I stopped.

  2. going up a lane of traffic on the inside (merge in turn and the other lane was standstill), should have spotted the gap in traffic and the guy turning right on the other side of the road, cue masses of braking.

Both incidents were a month or so ago and I have started looking around more, hopefully situations like the above can be avoided in future

Other than that the whole red mist thing at times when another bike comes along, I do tend to follow more often than I should.
