Hiprotec - any good?

Whats peoples opinions on Hiprotec as I need some protection in my new Sartso jeans and would prefer something not as bulky as the plastic stuff though still want as much protection as I can get.
Is it possible to hae the best of both worlds?

Thats the stuff Hein Gericke clothing uses. I’ve got some HG stuff that I bought in 2006 and although it looks crap on (due to being sold mens clothing) I havent been as impressed by the quality of any textiles I have bought since including Dainese and Spidi.
I havent crashed in it but see the point of it being slightly flexible so as to absorb some of the forces rather than just transmit them directly
Having researched the topic of armour in motorcycling gear for my masters, I can say there is no openly published data so unless you know someone in R+D at Dainese or Alpinestars etc, it would be hard to know whether something is better or just “different” for marketing reasons…
Ideally someone will come on here and say they have crashed in lots of different armours and can say how the hiprotec faired
See you soon Claire. x

I’ve got it in my HG textiles (only just remembered :D) and on both occasions where I took a tumble I didn’t feel the impact at all… mind you both tumbles were at relatively low speeds so not sure they are a thorough test. The things themselves feel quite sturdy despite being flexible and comparing it to the knox ones I have on my Hood Jeans, I feel more secure in the Hiprotect ones…

Great link Anita!

Seems it’s a no brainer, I might in fact pop down and get some 2morrow!

I’m guessing you’ve prob seen/ tried them but if not and you want me to bring some down to BMM tomorrow to have a closer look, let me know

Got an HG back protector made of the stuff.

No crashes but its nice and flexible, also fits my AS jackets back protector pocket, well its a bit loose but you dont notice.

Brilliant stuff…its that good i’ve sold all the spare sets i had kicking about…and know several people who have used them in jeans and have crashed and ended up wiv just bruises;)

the one in my HG jackets elbow has split in two after little over a year… and without my crashing! :ermm:

Thanks mate but I have got a couple of odd bits already! I had it for my first set of leathers though never actually put them in. Now I have two odd pieces of it as the other pairs are missing?!! I found them a while ago and since I’ve now got the jeans I thought it would be perfect as not as bulky as other protection.
See u later

I noticed that I commented on the BCF link :stuck_out_tongue:

Because I don’t use my textiles in summer because:

  1. They look ghey!
  2. I still have to change into jeans when I arrive at my destination
  3. Leathers just make sense
  4. But so do sartsos, and I’ve had the pleasure of crash testing them

I don’t particularly see the need in the armour.

My sartso killers don’t have provision for hip armour. When I went down at 25-30mph, it was my hip that got twatted onto to road first as the bike pinned me down for a good 10ft or so. I got minor bruising - nothing too significant - similar to a game of dead legs at high school or if you’ve been caught up in a brutal mosh pit.

I’ve tried putting SAS-Tec armour which I transferred from one of my HG trousers and it simply wasn’t flexible enough to form around the knee. Went on a ride with it once and decided to take it out straight away because I wasn’t happy with the coverage.

I then tried putting the hiprotec armour from my HG winter jacket. A bit more formable, but it’s a bit too dense and hard… again out that went.

I eventually opted for my alpinestars shoulder armour from my T-Dyno jacket. It stayed in place because of the velcro and formed nicely around the kneecup.

Unfortunately, with all these armour solutions, you compromise off-bike feel and comfort. The reason why I wear kevlar jeans is because I don’t want to have to change when i get to my destination. I do a lot of cheltenham->london jaunts for the odd weekend, so it makes sense to be “friday night ready” from the get go. If you try to run a bus down with armour, you’re asking for trouble. Similarly, if you’re trying to run down the r00d bwoi who nicked your ipod, then you’re probably going to lose too since you sacrifice mobility.

Logic dictates that if you wear decent biking boots (I personally wear either my Alpinestars SMX-R’s or SMX Plus’s) under your jeans, they have sufficient shin armour that protrudes an ample distance. These will touch down and absorb any impact with the tarmac as was the case with my spill, rendering knee armour uncessary in my case.

But then again, sometimes when I do the 120 mile journey, I just opt for the easy option - a pair of Vans skate shoes or Nike 6.0 hi-tops! Effectively, i’m pissing in the wind in terms of protection!

HG Hiprotec is good gear!

i’ve used it in my HG leathers for 4 years! its a mix of hiprotec and sas-tec armour.

and it works very very well, i’ve had an off in my leather jacket and had no injuries, with minimal bruising.

for sartso jeans its ideal, just get waspy to sew in some pockets;)

others worth looking at are Knox, and Forcefield, them and HG i would be looking at.

the actual hiprotect inserts can be made bigger by attaching a lower armour by means of pop rivetts, they also absorb some serious impact, despite looking a bit flimsy.

worth the £19.99:)
