Help! TomTom Rider SD card with France?

I downloaded the Western Euro maps from TOMTOM but it won’t fit on the original memory card. I’ve got a spare 2Gb card but if I do a manual copy of the contents of the original onto the new, the TomTom no longer boots up.

I tried to do a backup of the old card, and to restore to the new card but that just hangs (I left it running over night) or crashed the TomTom home application.

Anyone got any ideas, or better still anyone with French maps that would lend me their card for two weeks (you could use my UK card)?

My ferry is at 8.00am tomorrow so I’ve kind of left this a bit late…

There should be no problem copying ove from one card to another - I have done it loads of times. Ensure you have hidden files turned on - by default your operating system may not allow you to see hidden files so they won’t get copied over. Format the 2Gb card, and then copy the files from your old card to a folder on your computer. The copy the contents of that folder to the new card so it looks exactly like the old card. The device should boot-up fine. Once you have that then TT Home should install the new map on the device or however it works these days.

Feel free to PM me about any of this.

As for using someene else’s card, that probably wont work without you activating the card for your device online.

OK, thanks for the info.

I’ll try it again tonight.

BTW, when you format the card you need to make sure you format it as FAT and not NTFS or indeed, anything else - TT devices only read FAT.

Another problem is that XP, and possibly Vista, I don’t know, seem to format FAT in a way that some devices can’t read. If you have a camera or other device that uses SD cards and has a Format function, this may be more likely to work than formatingthe SD card in a card reader attached to your computer.

I had this problem when I bought a new card.

First things first format it, then make a copy of the you old card on your desktop, then copy that contents to the new card at computer level.

Should get it running and then you can load everything else through TomTom Home.

Got the maps installed now but it tells me it is not activated and to visit ttcodes.com.

I;ve done this but the device just says invalid activation code :frowning:

I’ve contacted TomTom customer support but it looks like I’m going to be doing this the old fashioned way as I’m off to get my ferry now!

Bad luck mate.

To be honest you can buy a paper map for 5 euros and navigate far more efficiently than the TomTom. I ended up hardly using mine as it kept choosing stupid route on bad roads.

Have a good trip.

yeah, was reqlly only going to use it to find my hotels in the towns

never mind found the first one ok, sat in a cafe in troyes right now, trying to cope with a french keyboqrd , all the keys in the wrong place, no full stop,

oh, found it…
