Help - Steering Barings

Hey all,

Bike failed the MOT due to loud exaust and the steering barings. Exhaust has been sorted (I put the baffle in . . . ), all i need to do now is change the bearings.

I have front and rear paddoc stands, but it appears the front is useless, as i have to remove the forks (Not looking forward to this!!!)

Does anyone have any suggestions how i can hold the bike in a steady position, while there is no front forks/wheel in place?

How good is the Hanes Manual to follow - ow will i end up with a bike in bits?

Thanks,

Chris

If you do a search on here for Head Bearings I seem to remember ADZ doing a step by step photo record of when he did his Gixxer head bearings.

Hope this helps mate.

FOUND IT!!!

I’m thinking that to get the front of the bike off the ground you will either need a Front head stand (if you are planning to keep the yokes on), or an Abba stand which allows you to pivot the bike on the swing arm pivot - allows you to get front wheel off the ground by placing a support under the engine (see links).

Sorry as this solution requires spending money but it’s all I can think off of the top of my head.

Sorry, but this is a dog of a job.

Once you have the bike holding up bit sorted, if you haven’t got a bearing extractor, make sure you have a long drift (some decent steel rod) and heavy hammer handy for tapping out the old bearings.

Then make sure you have a length of steel studding/nuts and some suitable size plate washers, to substitute for the press, for squeezing the new bearings into the head stock.

Better than just the plate washers are two sockets the same diameter as the outer races of the bearings.

I’ve known people who have tapped them in with a hammer and block of wood to get them started and finished off with a drift working bit by bit around the edge.

Iffy, but apparently doable. Best of luck.

if you got a garage with a strong overhead beam, chuck a rope over it and fix it to headstock, had a handy hole on the GSX but make sure you got someone to give you a hand

levitation is the best way…

you can do it with just a rear stand and a jack as in the pic above, i photo shopped the jack out

if you hang it off a beam its a pain as the bike swings about…

just make shure you strap the bike to the rear stand and put somthing heavy on the stand like a paving slab…

LOL@ adz:D

I looked at the pic before reading the text and thought WTF!!!:w00t:

Nice PS mate;):D:D

WTF!!! I WAS LOOKING AT THE PIC IN AMAZEMENT FOR ABOUT 30 SECONDS!(EXCELLENT PHOTOSHOPPING SKILLS!)

Adz, you have a PM Mate!

trolley jack and a block of wood under the engine/headers, i’ve done loads that way…

Dunno what you’re like with a spanner? you need to be a little bit handy really to do head bearings, just the potential of making a bloody mess if you aint…

Best tool for removing the races from the headstock is a slide-hammer - makes very easy work of it.

Installing the new bearings is easy - made easier by putting them in the freezer overnight beforehand.

Tap the new ones in using the old ones as a drift.

Why didn’t someone give me tips like that before I fought the last couple of sets into place?

Nice one Gurniman.

What`s a baring? Is there one on my bike? Is it related to a faring?

Yeah, nice one Gurniman - your application of physics wouldn’t have occurred to me in a thousand years!

Baring? I thought it was that bank that Nick Leeson fella screwed back in 95!

You can make a handy slide hammer from a 12" length of M10 studding, 2 nuts and two penny washers.

Slide a chunky 1/2" drive socket up and down its length:cool:

slide hammer? you may need a LUMP hammer!!! i did to get the steering stem out of Jays k5 thou…!!

stem had welded it self to the top inner race
