Camden Council have given the go ahead for the wrecking balls to go in and destroy Stables Market in Camden.
This means the end of The Proud Galleries (served notice closing in a couple of weeks), the funky, vintage stores, Cyberdog, etc - you get the gist - one of the best things in all of London is about to be taken away from us.
What are they putting in it place? Boots, H&M and Topshop. Why should we let trendy bullshit chain stores ruin our alternative culture and lifestyle in london.
PLEASE help us stop them from doing this by signing the petition:
Hmm Joolz, I work on Stables market, and I an involved with the planning fo the future works (specifiacally in terms of health and safety), far from wrecking the market, the expansion is extensive. Building D will soon open offering many of the market holders new stalls in a safe environment while the now delapidated buildings are demolished and replaced with 2 new buildings specifically designed to house the stall holders and expand thier plots. This is run by the market themselves, a nice chap who has grand plans for the current situation. Stables market is old and the buildings are crumbling, they need replacement NOW or they will be demolished and the market will be gone forever. This really is the only way forward. Its designed to BE the new market and not some dodgy shopping mall. Its gonna be awesome, just be patient.
Call me cynical then, ive seen these ‘promises’ before. Look at Carnaby Street AKA Anyoldhighst, UK, compared to how it used to be, original and a tourist attraction.
I adore Camden, i purchase a lot of my fetish wear there and my friends from Manchester travel down to visit too. Yes I agree if a building is unsafe then it needs rectifying, but as the Stables has been there since 1854, it’ll be a sad day to just knock it down and rebuilt with a ‘new shopping centre’ which is what i fear. The redevelopment which opened last year was great, and retained its dark catacomb type feeling. Its just the last statement on the Development page on the website which worried me:-
The new developments will provide a host of new ideas, including themed bars, restaurants, leisure venues, hundred of new retail and food shops, and much more, taking Stables Market and Camden to a new level.
New retail? ie. another Tescos/M&S/New Look/Next outlet? Food shops? Another KFC/Maccy D, isnt there enough unique food stalls already?
I hope they keep the old ‘flavour’ of Camden.
BTW, Red, if you have any more information on whats doing to coming to Camden, id be interested to hear from you.
I understand your cynicism, and yes some of the stalls have had to reduce while the run down buildings are demolished and buildings A and B are built (there is limited space in building D). Sure the current buildings are old and its a shame to see them go in terms of the feel of the place, but this is due to lack of investment and they are too far gone now However the internal decor for the new build will really suit the stalls currently there and expand on the vibe of the current venue and be BIGGER.
But D will be great when it opens, a big floor extending from the latest opening with a mezanine floor to help the stall holders stay open. When A and B open (in about a year or so) the stalls will expand into the new area. Yes there may be some bars and nightclubs, but Boots and TopMan are not on the agenda as far as I know.
Remember this is run by the market, for the market with the stall holders in mind - not some overcommercialised money grabbing shopping precinct. It really will look great and the new buildings look cool.
Just pop into Stanley Sidings office in the current market area and have a look at the models, it will put your mind at ease. Its gonna be great and in just 2 years to completion weather permitting.
There isnt anything to be found to research Jim, its all tight lipped as to what shops/bars are going to be at Camden, you dont have to be Einstein to understand why.
Maybe when and if they bulldoze Popes Grotto to make way for a Maccy D drive through, you will have something different to say.
