HELP new chain and sprockets

can anyone explain chains and sprockets to me please?

i looked up kits on google. i saw front sprocket measurements such as 285-530-15… and a similar 404-530-48 for the rear.

also, how do i know how many links my chain should have? 106, 108 or 110?

complete noob here - im guessing all these numbers have something to do with the speed or acceleration?

If you want standard, I would just go to wemoto.co.uk and put your bike model and year in and buy a kit.

Big topic chain and sprocket ratios, basically find your standard for your model and go:

Lower number of teeth on front and/or larger number on the back - gives faster acceleration but lower top speed.

and vice versa.

The chain number (108/110) etc I think is the number of links in the chain, you need more links if you go for a larger sprocket on the rear (but not sure what thresholds are…) Best thing is probably go to somewhere like essential rubber or FWR and chat to them they will sort you out.

+1 for either of those two places

ok thanks chaps… just spoken to the awesome essential rubber… will prob just get it done from them.

i was thinking to get the kit and fit myself… save me a few bob, but fug it!! will just get it done!!

cheers for the info…

To be honest jobs like this are good to do yourself as it gives you experience and confidence to tackle other bits on the bike. you need the right tool for the job before you start and they can be picked up from £30 upwards, it breaks the chain and joins it after.

Why are you changing the chain and sprockets? If its merely because they are old and need changing then go for stock sizes, or you can keep the stock size chain and go up 2 on the rear if you want a little faster excelleration, for example 14 Tooth to 16Tooth.

Oh, if your bike is a R6 2002 standard is 116 Link chain, 16T Front Sprocket and 48T Rear.

I would go for 15T front and 50T rear Fast excelleration

thats is top advice RedZ.

reason for change is because my one is completely rusted and needs adjusting every 2-3 weeks now (i do around 80-100 miles a week).

I bought the bike back in november last year. as a noobie, i didnt know what to look at regards chains etc… so when i took it into essential rubber last week for a tyre plug, i was told that the chain on there was the shittiest cheapest nastiest **** it could have. i dont think it even has ‘o’ or ‘x’ rings. i reckon the dude selling must have changed the chain or sumthin when it got sold!

anyway you live and learn, appreciate your reccomendations!

Just note that if you change the sprockets from standard - you will need a speedo healer to make the speedo reading correct.
Not a huge worry if you go without around town… but obv - the higher speeds you go the more the discrepency etc…

cheers Ian, I didnt even know you would need to do that! probably will stick to the standards then i guess… save fannying around with other stuf i dont know about!
