Help Needed - Visor Clear & Other Such Stuff

Afternoon Fellow LBers,

I was just about to start buying some cleaning products, chain lube, visor clear etc… and wanted to ask if there are any particular products that are good / should be left well alone.

To put some context to this request - I only found out yesterday that jetwashes at petrol stations have cleaning stuff in 'em!

I’ve got a brand new bike & helmet, so more specifically:

For daily commutes along A / B roads and a bit of town riding, am I likely to need brake cleaner for a bit?Does that water-repelling Visor Clear stuff work ok?Any opinions on Tech 7 products? (Offroad Bikestore has a BOGOF offer on at the mo)Also, any general advice would be very much appreciated - things like:

What does a good basic cleaning kit consist of? (Have been looking at YouTube vids so far)
Do I really need aluminium cleaner, metal polish, plastic polish, chain cleaner, wet & dry chain lube, brake cleaner etc… or are there just a couple of products that would do the job just as well as having a bucketful of other bottles and lotions?
What are people’s thoughts on using a petrol station jetwash and then buffing it up at home?I did have a quick squizz through other posts first, so if you know where any of these answers are lurking on LB, please just point me in the right direction

Cheers all,

Steve

I use:

Wurth brake and chain cleaner for the brakes and general de-gunking
Paraffin for cleaning the chain
Wurth dry lube
Muc-Off for the worst of the dirt
Tesco mild car shampoo for the rest
WD-40 for the 'lectrics

One of those mitten things for washing large areas
A microfibre cloth
Wheel brush
Toothbrush
Chamois leather

I also had the chaps at All Year Biker treat my SV with ACF-50 to help keep corrosion at bay throughout the winter.

Oh - and a rear paddock stand that Mrs 5150 bought me for Christmas. It makes doing the chain SO much easier.

Cheers  Gives me a good starting point

Be very careful with a jetwash and where you point it. They have been known to degrease wheel bearings, de-lacquer alloy and get under and lift paint. My bro Beemerman knackered the kill-switch on his R850R with a jetwash, cost him £125 for a new unit!!!

Wouldn’t use one myself. For the grimy bits - spray degreaser (I like Castrol bike cleaner, similar to Muc-Off but not as agressive!), brush to loosen, watering can to wash off. Wash mitt and bucket for bodywork.
