Help needed no bike purchase of the self powered kind

So me buying a new push bike is iminenat as my company has joined the cycle to work scheme, I have been to a few shops and every single one has told me something different.

I will be the 1st to admint I know very little about push bikes so don;t knwo what to look for so I’m looking for peoples advice on here as I know some of you are keen cyclists as well.

So what am I after.

budget £500-£600(600 at a push) in the grand scheme of things know it is not alot but hey everyone has a limit.

now I will be mostley cycling to work in central london so looking for something nimble. Looking to keep the weight down as much as possible.

but with the other shopd I have been told I do want suspension I don’t want it, I want disc brakes I don’t want them so basically you can see that these shops are making it as hard as possible at the moment.

So any advice of suggestions on bike would be great. If you going to offer a suggestion of a shop they need to be part of the cycle to work scheme or I will not be able to get the bike ther.

So over to you guys (sorry for the really long post)

Sounds like you need a full suspension, but make sure that you can lock the front suspension.

Cable disc brakes front and rear and road tyres

Catalogue is in French, but you will get the idea

Decatholon is also pretty good when you know what you are looking for

lol see one of the guys said front suspension only, the other said no suspension your sayign full suspension. NOOOOOOOOOO your making it worse! :w00t:

Look on the decathalon site

http://www.decathlon.co.uk/EN/rockrider-5-3-34963817/

This will do everything that you want. If you lock the front, you will only have the suspension at the back, and with the pot holes in London, you’ll need it

if you are just commuting to work you do not need any suspension !

In addition you dont need to spend that much money, those shops are taking you for a ride (see what I did there).

But you need to answer that vital question…is the bike just for riding to work and commuting or you do intend to do off road riding ?

I would like to say yes I’m goign to do off roading but the chances are slim, plus one of them said suspension (even just front) on a £500 will not be that good. Thing is the shop price is for example £500 I’m only actually going to pay circa £280 so cannot complain really.

okay well if you arent going to do off road (you know you arent :D)

then spend the money getting a quality bike and not paying for shitty suspension, its just something else to go wrong and add weight to your bike. With the subsidy you can pay less and get a decent bike for the riding you will do.

one of the guys suggested a Scott sub 30. is this the kind thing I shoul be looking at?

Hmmmm been looking to sell one of my Canondales !!!

Are you part of the cycle to work scheme? if the answer is yes then maybe we can talk :P:P:P

why do you want a mountain bike type bike for road riding?
I’m just about to get my 2nd bike2work bike and am going for one of these:

I really like the look of the scott sub 30 which is a rigid framed mount bike, but essentially has the setup of a road bike, so the seating position is more like a racer than a mountain…so probably going to go for something similar pending that is what I should be looking at…

I can’t recommend Specialized enough, well built and affordable, I have a Hard Rock Comp, It has front suspension, cable centre pull brakes, steer well clear of rear suspension as they are not really designed for long distances, If you’re anywhere near Windsor, then visit Stows on the Dedworth Rd, speak to Mike and tell him I sent you, he’ll sell you exactly what YOU need.

A Scott sub 30 has V brakes!!

Absolutely nothing wrong with V brakes, Good quality V Brakes can out perform cable disc brakes!

ricky speaks the truth. however a pair of Hayes HFX9’s can be picked up for £70 and they’re amazing in comparison.

Still don’t know why you won’t get a road bike.

They say real men ride rigid. Dutch style bikes like the one in my avatar are great if you can find one.

i just got a carrera vanquish through the cycle to work scheme from halfords, cost just under £500, been using it every other day for my commute to work 7-8 mile round trip butr yeserdsay done a 40ish mile country lane/hill blast and was brill, much lighter and heck of alot faster and nimbler than my mtbhttp://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&partNumber=771881&langId=-1&cm_mmc=Sitename--Adult+Bikes%2FRoad+Bikes--Na-_-Carrera+Vanquish+Large+Road+Bike+08&source=shopping&istCompanyId=b8708c57-7a02-4cf6-b2c0-dc36b54a327e&istItemId=litall&istBid=t
