HELICOIL INSERTS?

Hello fellow biking folk.Quick question about helicoil inserts - the small bolt that secures one of the rear hugger fastening struts to the swingarm has popped out - close inspection shows the thread in the hole in the swingarm which the bolt screws into has stripped.

I’m guessing I need to repair the thread with a helicoil insert so I can thread in the bolt and secure the strut - is this something i should take to a garage or is it worth buying a helicoil kit and simple enough to DIY?

Thanks for any info. ;)

:D:D:D A wind up…right?

BTW I took the front mudguard off my ZZR yeasterday…and sheared 2 bolts… If you can give me any tips on drilling them out neatly it would be greatly appreciated

It’s worth buying the kit, but I would go for Time-serts - they are stronger and more durable than helicoils.

Used to use them all the time when I were an engineery type

Personally - I would just whip the forks out and take them to someone with a flatbed drill who does this kind of thing for a living. . .

Thanks G - i’ll check out the Time-serts - p.s. will this involve more drilling. . . :ermm:

aye, more drilling…

time sert is a far more superior and permanant repair, helicoils tend to come out with the bolt again whereas time serts stay put and are often stronger than the original thread !

time sert is stronger and more permanent than heli coil , been using time serts for years and never had one come out when removing a bolt

Thanks for the info guys - to be honest - I’ve had enough of this sh1t - I already shelled out on a caliper piston removal kit - and I’ve run out of budget for more tools this year.

Is there anywhere you know that will do this for me - most bike shops don’t seem to like to get involved in this kind of borroks. Thanks.

Thanks Dan. ;)

Can’t you just open it out and go the next size bolt up?:Whistling:

I think Sid’s next bike ought to be held together by velcro:D

:stuck_out_tongue: I’ve decided that I’m going to limit myself to plastic models from now on and just glue them together. . .

Yup, that might work, but have you ever tried taking one of those plastic model apart?

You’ll need a Dremel.
