Gutted

You would have thought fitting an R&G crash bung set to a street triple would be simple. 4 bolts, replace one at a time… job done… who’s for tea?!

First one removed quite simple, other three were REALLY REALLY tough to loosen. Problem is that the front two (2 closest to front of bike) keep spinning! I’ve also tried to tighten them with no luck. Really pissed off.

Did I do anything wrong? I mean, a bolt is a bolt isnt it? How else would Triumph or anyone else have undone it?

Is there something I’m missing? or has the thread got some sort of housing in the frame, and that is what has come undone? If so, is it my fault, or is it something I should complain about?

Is this something that can be sorted pretty easily??

help please!!!

They are spinning as you try and undo them?

Is there a nut or something behind the frame?

Hi mate,

Theyre spinning in the same position as I try to undo them, and the same when I try to tighten them?

Cant get my hand in to see if there’s any sort of fixing behind?

Followed the R&G instructions to a ‘t’, but it just says to undo them! Out of the 4 that need removing, the back two spin out ok, without a problem, but they’re chromed ones and right on the surface, so I dont know if the difficult 2 are housed the same?

I’ve never worked on Triumphs so can’t really help.

I do know both my TL and VTR need a special castelated socket to get the engine bolts out. Are you sure its a normal hex head bolt?

Sorry Chunks, I’m not too clued up on mechanics, but the bolt heads just have a simple hex hole, of which the allen key I have fits nicely?

Do you mean there’s some sort of mechanism which releases the bolt (sort of ‘pulls’ on it), rather than just loosen it?

No mate, they have castelations on the head instead of a hex.

May be worth giving your dealer a quick call.

Yeah, I think its a dealer issue.

Man Im gutted. Just washed and cleaned it too!!!

Thanks anyway mate, I’ll let you know what happens :frowning:

Have a good xmas 2mrw, and prob see you at the next Herts meet… hopefully with my bike! lol

dont know your bike that well but on the r1 the upper mounts are normal threads, and the engine mounts have a split housing that expands and grips the surrounding hole in the frame when the bolt moves through it (kinda like the metal equiv of a wall raw plug i suppose)you have to be a bit careful the way you start doing the thread up to make it grip enough that the bolt will turn in the housing, and not make it spin

maybe check the instructions to see if its that type/check with the dealer? if so maybe pull the bolt towards you before trying to turn it, it may be enough to grip.

good luck

Thanks mate, i’ll check it out. Hopefully, thats all it is!

have a good xmas

Hey Alex,

I mounted some bungs on my Speed Triple, and the front engine mount bolts thread into nuts on the other side of the mounting lugs, rather than the lugs themselves being threaded.

Maybe the Street Triple is similar? The nuts are a right bugger to get to, but with a bit of patience and a few of your favourite swear words, it’s not too bad.

Ditto on my 1050 Sprint ST. The engine mounting bolts had a nut on the back end. It was a right bugger getting a spanner in there. My knuckles still bear the scars. Good luck with it.

If you are about on Thursday I don’t mind having a look at it for you.

Saw these in this months Classic Bike -

Strikes me as a brilliant idea, all those frustrating times I’ve spent trying to get a nut started in behind a panel etc.

I’m gonna order me a set tomorrow.

I loikes them I do:cool::slight_smile:

That’s clever

Cheers guys, i’ll have a look in the morning. Sorry i didnt get back earlier - i’ve been as sick as a dog since monday night, so xmas has been spent laid out! bummer.

sounds promising though!

I’ll let you know…
