Looked out the window here in west surrey and looking pretty deep - got a good reason to be in south london tonight and wondering if I should attempt it on my 98 hornet winter hack (nice light bike - easy to pick up off the floor. . . )?
Have ridden in snow before but a mate says main roads in surrey is slush turning to ice which don’t sound good - if m3 is gritted and london roads passable then I may give it a go?
Any opinions from anyone whose been out in London or up the m3?
I did 5 miles midnight last night and I’ve been 5 miles this morning, and yes it’s all wet slush out there which is no issue on the main roads. Thankfully it’s not actually that cold out there; if it does drop to -2/3 then i’d start to be concerned that the salted roads are icing at night.
I wouldn’t do it. Not worth the risk. Remember you’re not just a danger to yourself, but you’ll have to deal with some of south London’s finest drivers.
Only walking to the station this morning, I’ve seen a BMW doing a 360 in the middle of the road, gassing it like he had no idea it was a rwd car spinning around, I’ve seen vans speeding like they wouldn’t have to ever stop etc.
I got caught out last year in the snow just after 5PM when the temperatures started to drop suddenly and busses were sliding around on the Old Kent Road.
The risk of being taken out is just not worth it in my opinion.
And for buying a cheap crosser, I’ve been trying for the last couple of months. I don’t think you can put those 2 words in the same sentense anymore. A ratty CRM250 with rattly engine and rust (and a load of other minor stuff) went for nearly £800 on ebay, and this morning, a 12 year old DR350 I had my eye on went for nearly £1300!!
lol! Yeah after I thought about the sods law thing I thought It was my absolute duty go out and buy the crosser as a christ like act of sacrifice thus ensuring mild winters for my motorcycling brethren . . .
I hear what your saying Driesie mate. But I guess non of us would ride if we didn’t have a risk taking streak in our personalities - so I’m gonna venture forth.Yeah - the used market in bikes is really strong at the moment - I guess it’s partly because people aren’t signing up for 36 months finance or whatever on new machines what with all this financial insecurity.
i live in chertsey and just drove up to heathrow. main roads are good, back roads are not.I heard yesterday that the A3 around Guildford was impassible, and looking down towards the M3 today (from M25) it looked heavy.
I certainly wouldnt reccommend it on a bike, but im not yer ma, so the choice is yours! temperature read between -3 and -2 the whole way
Thanks Steve - roads were ok on the S.Circular until I got to the Dulwich area which was luckily my destination - at this point it seems like they stopped gritting the roads and things got really slippery and slidy - I could see what roadrunner was talking about now - if I had had to go any further into South East London it would have been really grim with the strong possibilty of decking the bike and then having to get it upright again in the slippy ice and slush which would have been a bit of a sh1t scenario - a lot of wheel spinning and a couple of near offs meant I was really happy when I got to where I was going and parked up for the night!Definitely want a 250/500 crosser or a ktm with knobblies if winters like this are gonna be a regular thing!
