Good routes up to Manchester

I am considering my compulsary annual trip up to Manchester in the near future to do the rounds.

Can anyone suggests any good routes?? I live off the M40 (Junction 4) and wondered if it would be too out of the way if i went across and through Wales or is there any good routes if i go straight up??

Just PM’d a link to a tracker for part of the route we did back from Cumbria, might help you.

There was a pull out in one of the bike magazines a few weeks ago with good biking road alternatives to motorways, I’ll se if I can find it at home tonight.
