Going Wireless

Righty, am looking into buying the scala rider to link into my phone, so thought that I might be able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone and as am due for an upgrade on my mobile, thought I would look into getting one with satnav built into it.

Was looking at the Nokia N95 or similar, but I hear that you pay per mile to use the nokia maps or pay a monthly subscription for voice guidance?

Does anyone know or can provide advice before I take the plunge?

yeah the nokia maps work fine to locate your position and browse about, but you pay (yearly sub i think) for the voice navigation functionality to be unlocked

also if you dont download the maps before you travel, it will download them over the network and cost you a bomb

i have the N82 and am very happy with it but would not use it for car/bike navigation

the N95/N82 can however run other sat nav software as are they run the symbian OS, unfortunately i think the built-in GPS will not work with anything other than nokia maps and you would need a separate bluetooth GPS…having said that you can find tomtom sofware for free on the net

one cool feature when on foot is you can put a destination into the maps and turn on a GPS compass to guide you there, its not chargable so you have rough GPS nav in a way

Thank you, I was looking at voice guidance more than visual which I would look into linking via bluetooth with the scala headset. Would probably be rarely used (which is why I dont want to invest in a satnav for the bike for occasional use) but would be helpful to have the two in one, as I would always have my phone on me anyway.

I might consider it as I hear that the N95 black automatically has the voice guidance.

More research required me thinks.

Cheers matey.

I’m pretty sure route66 works with n95.

I would suggest to go here: www.forum.gsmhosting.com and search for it;)

cool i’ll give that a go
this signing of symbian apps with a publisher id is annoying though!

I can vouch for the scala rider - it’s crystal clear. You think you can’t be heard, the wind noise is awful, but at 70mph the person at the other end will think you are sat in a layby somewhere. Use the open face boom regardless of your lid.

I’m testing mine with a Zumo ATM. It’s a superb combo.

There’s a Q2 model coming out which can pair with 4 devices and does 450m rider-rider…

just found Garmin Mobile XT that claims to be able to use N82/N95 built-in GPS
will try and install it this evenin’

I use a T mobile bluetooth mda, running copilot live software. Works fine

ok, now you’re just talking japanese!

Is that anything that comes with it all built in or would I then have to add the software?

Oops! Sorry about that. I knew what I meant, but I suppose it’s a bit unfair to assume you’d be psychic:). I’ll try again…

I use a phone that’s called a T Mobile MDA. It has bluetooth and a built in GPS (which is the reason I got it). The GPS runs on CoPilot Live software, which came already loaded on the phone on a contract deal from T Mobile (who are also very handy because they do a flat rate monthly charge for all internet use). The SatNav software works well (as well as my Garmin SPIII, and as well as my previous phone did when running route 66).

Hope that’s better

Roger, Wilko! Got ya matey, am not particularly mobile savvy.Does the GPS guidance have voice guidance. My whole line of thinking was having a new mobile phone with “satnav” built in so that I can follow the voice if need be through a blue tooth headset, namely scala rider without the need to purchase a separate sat nav device.I know Nokia have voice guidance available on some phones, but there is a subscription to pay for a set period, just wondered if there is anything out there with it all built in, as that would be very handy.

I’ve never paired my phone GPS with my scala (I have a bike gps, and my scala is on an old helmet that I don’t use all that often, so the occasion’s not arisen). I mainly use the phone gps on the odd occasions that we hire a car. In those instances, the voice prompts from the gps are excellent. Nice and loud.

I’ve paired the phone itself with the scala, but only for playing music from the phone’s MP3 player - I’ve not used the phone gps whilst it’s been paired with scala. Sorry.

I assume it will work, (on the basis that the phone pairs with scala for other applications, and that the gps has good loud voice prompts when you use it without bluetooth) but that’s not good enough info for you really, is it?

It sounds as though it should work but I am no expert.I assume that you do not have to pay exra for the voice prompts as with Nokia you do. I guess I just have to find the appropriate phone. Thanks for your help.

i have the O2 XDA ORBIT2 it has sat nav and gps built in via an extra sim. It’s called Co-pilot and it’s excellent. Crisp voices (choice of) and all the extras you’d find on a much bigger sat nav.You get a choice of bundle for free but if you want extra ie europe or america then thats extra.Other than that it’s completely free. Not had any problems with it and i’ve used it extensively in the car over the last 3 months.(Even the PHONE is free on a £35 per month contract.)it does have voice guidance and i have used it via bluetooth and my Nolan lid/communicator and it works well.

TomTom works a treat on the N95 as well.

I currently have TomTom, Nav4All and the Nokia maps as well loaded up on my N95. The nokia maps version is good for the car, no voice though and Nav4All is more accurate but you have to connect to them via data connect to get maps every time you use it… All in all the TomTom works the best overall but the maps could use a good update!

can tomtom use the built-in GPS in the N95/82 now?

I don’t pay anything extra. I think I’m using data-time (or whatever you call it when you connect to the internet via your phone) when I’m on the satnav, but with my T Mobile package I’ve got unlimited web use for a flat fee (which is £7.50/month, I think). It’s a £30 or £35 package, iirc, and the phone and satnav bundle was “free” with that package.Happy if I can help, but I’m sure someone else’ll be along with more experience of it than me. I do remember when I was looking for this phone, that there were a few review websites (usefully, I can’t remember any of their names!) for mobile gps users, which I found quite useful. I just googled for them. HTH

Thanks for all your help guys, this is the sort of thing I was looking for I think, and as am on o2, may be the way forward.

Hello mate,

Try having a look on these sites for the Scala Rider gear, you can pick up a team set on e-bay for around the price of the regular set in te shops. DHGate is also good for all the other electricals. Got my Scala Rider for £51 by shopping around, and it’s as clear as a bell!

Hope this helps mate,

RR

(It may have changed since I got my phone, but) O2 used to be v expensive for data use (which was why I ended up going with T Mobile - even though O2 had some good looking phones). As I say, it may all have changed, but it’s good to check before going ahead, otherwise you could be looking at some big bills.
