For those with TomTom sat nav devices, Tyre (Trace Your Route Everywhere) might be a very helpful little prog. Seems like it was made by a biker and there are already routes available to DL via for the app which can be added as itineraries to your device.

Try using a map, they are really good and have coloured bits for beginners and everything. We found them really useful on a trip to the Gabon, however souvenir tea towels cover most of Great Britain.

I have used Tyre, but there are also many scripts which will convert routes from maps.google.co.uk to TomTom itineraries etc that I find easier to use. There are several on google, such as this one - http://www.houghi.org/tomtom/
