After deciding to go ahead with the Givi purchase, I’ve run into my first glitch. It looks like you can only use monolock cases on the bracket they supply for the ER-6F. The bracket has a maximum recommended weight of 6KG.
I was all set to buy the E55 when I discovered this, but that case alone weighs about 4.6kg, so it would only leave 1.5KG for luggage.
I’m now looking at the E460 which is a monolock case and weighs 3KG. But my chain weighs 3.9KG on it’s own, so I couldn’t even carry that in there. If I take the chain with, there’s no room for luxuries like clean underwear.
Does anyone know what the realistic weight limits for givi mounting brackets are or what other options I could look at? Ideally, I’d like to get at least 5KG of luggage weight if I’m going to shell out this much for a case setup.
Bad form, replying to myself, but I’ve also just read that the monolock (which is the only cases recommended for this bracket) are not suitable for high-speed use - only the monokey is.
So I guess I’m really looking for a monolock bracket for an ER-6, but they don’t seem to make one. Weird.
I have a monolock E450 and I recall the weight limit was something daft low, might be 6kg. I’ve had it loaded with atleast 20 kg fine. It’s just to cover their backs. I believe it’s down to the limit of what the rear of the bike can handle, but you’re only going to hit problems if you’re riding with a pillion and both of you are fat
had more than 20 kilos in my topbox and panniers, and suffice to say they go way beyong the 120 kph speed rating by a LONG way, just load it properly and you be fine, look at the pix of us lot on way to normandy last year give you an idea
Quick question - do you have the lighting kit for your E450?
I’m trying to work out what extra I need to buy if I go that route.
I’ve got the choices down to the E370, E450 and the E470. The tossup between the E370 and E470 is weight - According to the website, the bigger box is .5KG lighter than the smaller box.
There’s a 30 quid difference between the price of the E470 and the E450 as well, so if the E450 is a double-skinned type box, that looks very appealing at that price point with a working light kit.
I am not one for caring too much about aesthetics but it’s worth considering. After putting little thought into which box I chose when the bike was new, I think the E450 suits the ER6-F well. Too small looks dinky and bigger is daft and doesn’t add much more space. I can fit two lids or a 15.4" laptop or armoured trousers/boots in mine which fits my needs.
I purchased the brake light kit but the bulbs soon blew and the contacts on the wiring dodgy! I made up my own light kit with reliable LED’s and electrical connection.
I have the E52, its heavy even when empty. It does act like a big wind sock on the back of the bike. I think 126 was top speed + 10mph without it on. When I’ve been on holiday it was stuffed full of cloths, books, shoes etc. I’ve probably had 40kgs on the back. I know it has a silly low weight limit, but I think that is there just so you can’t sue Givi if anything did happen. Its like saying there may be nuts in this product, which is printed on virtually every food product you look at. Never had a problem, although the bike does handle differently with more weight over the rear. Easier to get the front up
I think that the E52 is actually a monokey device, so it’s got a much higher loading, especially when used with the correct rack.
The rack for the ER-6 is what defines the 6KG weight limit. They do racks for most other bikes I’ve owned that will take monokey, but they only advise the monorack for the ER-6.
Bah!
Having said that, after 2 days of talking to various people at Givi UK, I’m seriously thinking of buying Kappa. They all agree that the weights of the boxes indicated on their site are wrong. They all agree that the way they display the weights is confusing. But none of them know the right answers so they’re waiting for Italy to respond now. And waiting… And waiting…
