Considering i cant get out on the bike yet i decided to go do a spot of shooting as me mum and her fella want 6 rabbits. Well after 3 hours worth of creeping around i managed to only shoot 2, could of had a couple more if i wasnt so slow at pulling the trigger…
The route i go when i go shooting i could walk in about 20min at my normal pace but it took me 3 hours to do it, thats how slow i go when im trying to sneak up on some unsuspecting little bunny…
How many people are gona hate me when they read this?
How many other LB’ers like doing a spot of hunting?
I know that but alot of people think shooting rabbits and alike is cruel, no offence but the majority of those people are townies. Ive lived in the county side all my life and been brought up around fox hunting(which will never realy stop) and alike but ive had many a people tell me im cruel for killing animals, some wouldnt even talk to me once they find out but i dont give a flying hoot
Used to work as a gamekeeper before i joined the army. Off out again later, just before it gets dark is the best time for the rabbits.
Did get out 2 nights a week and Sunday hunting rabbit, squirels and if asked the odd fox but don’t get out that often anymore.
Still do a bit of pest control now and then for a mates company and occasionaly go down to Tenterden where theres a really good air rifle hunting range, 20 traps 40 targets set from 10 to 100 yds.
I used to do a bit of pest control for a couple of crop growers… Used to bag loads of Rabbits. It makes a great substitute for Chicken.I did a bit of stalking if I was in the mood, but mainly ambushed. I mostly use a Pre-charged .22 Logun MKII with a Logun silencer and Hawke Nite-eye 6.5-20X50 Scope with a red filtered lamp. I could pick off two or three before the rest of the field scattered. Much better than a noisy springer.
Although Rabbits are a pest and should be taken from land, I always tried to eat as much as I could. Any that where a bit ropey got left for the Foxes.
Ha ha, i use some cheap .22 springer, dont even think its at the full 12lbft even though the bloke said it was but it doesnt seem as powerfull as rifles ive had in the past, id say its more about 10lbft but i can still kill the rabbits with one shot to the head. The whole reason i dont do the lie and wait is cause of the fact by the time you’ve shot one and reloaded to take out another they have all scarpered. I dont do it enough anymore to justify getting a decent rifle again and the one ive got does the job, just have to be more patient for the perfect shot, can drop anything upto about 15metres with the one ive got. Best shot i had with my last one which was only a .177 best shot i had was 25-30 metres, was well shocked when i first dropped a rabbit from that far.Everytime before i go out i zero in on a target in the back garden and shoot at it from different distances just so when i shoot at the real thing i dont miss. I always go for headshots, gets you the best money if you sell them on but i normaly give them to friends/relatives.
where can we go cos i’ve got lots of air rifles and air pistols we can use:hehe: dont worry if we dont get a direct kill i’ll finish it with a knife:D but tbh would only go if someone want to eat them cos would be a waste
I go shooting back home(which obviously is where i am now) its in the countryside well away from any major towns so dont get any hassle from anyone when i walk round with my rifle.
Oh and i shoot for the enjoyment of it, shooting at targets is not as fun as shooting at live bait… all that i kill gets eaten by someone or my mates ferrets.
Get yourself a 12 bore, size 6 pellets. As you say, dusk is the best time to get them. Sneak up making sure you are downwind of them. Angle it so you can catch as many as possible in the cone. If you’re lucky you should be able to get 4 or 5 with a single shot. You will get better when you become more familiar with how the pellets spread out.
I used to do this as part of a job, poor student living on a farm.
A friend of mine took me shooting some years ago. At the end of a very tiring day I sat back to reflect. TBH I’d have rather taken my camera, it would have been so much harder to get the shot that way than it was with a 12 gauge shot gun? But each to their own!
Some farming friends of mine run a shoot, when I was a kid I’d been beating there.
Absolutely loved it and miss it. Spent hours quietly walking round quarries and woods when I lived in Yorkshire. Had a .22 AGS lite W8 Carbine rifle which I replaced of few of the internals :Whistling: I Chronographed it at 22ft/pounds something like 750 ft/sec :hehe: Dont try it at home its a jailable offence :w00t: but i was young and silly
I could pick a head shout out at about 75-80 yards with a Bipod about 55-60 yards standing
Favorite time was dusk in the summer have some of the most peacefull memories and moments walking round the beautifull countryside in amongst such bloodshead :D:D:D:D
Where is the fun in that? I enjoy having to sneak up on my unsuspecting prey, take an aimed shot, pop it square in the head and watch it drop down dead then think to myself yeah that was a damn good shot
I first got took beating when i was about 9, used to love it, the guns would always bring in a bottle of port for us at lunch and the gamekeeper made his own cider. Worked for a shoot since i did my work experience there when i was 14 untill i was 24 so 10 years… wow doesnt seem that long till you look back on it.
