Garages & Secure Parking (rented or home)

I’ve had this conversation with insurers before. If you get into the details, what qualifies as a garage is something “brick built” which only you, or your family, have access to. The latter you can obviously fulfil but the former would not be fulfilled by this box.

I suspect they would rate this box like they do ground anchors, trackers etc. That is, they will allow you a discount against any one security device, not all of them.

All sage advice above.
I’d chime in on the topic of moving out of central London, and say, whatever you do, rent first to try it out. There’s some godawful places which look good on paper, and some lovely ones that you may overlook. I moved around a bit, and thank fuck I didn’t settle in the first out of town place we rented.

Go on then, where don’t you want to live?

That’s good advice. It worked like that with me when I moved out of London. Not by plan but by accident. Ended up buying the place we had been renting for a year and didn’t have to deal with lots of housebuying nonsense (still had to do some).

We knew the town, it suited us and also were lucky not to have to do surveys

Would be interested to hear the places you liked and didn’t!

too true. We had a year in Hemel Hempstead as a result of this (a year as thats how long the contract was). the day we moved in we got passed by a stolen bike, which nicely set the mood.

it didnt help that the garage we rented was about 500m from the house, and out of view. I thought that was still good, but it meant working on the bikes was a faf (couldnt nip in to use the loo or get a thing), and always worried that someone had pried the door open.
Garage was also unpowerd, and no street lighting there, did like putting the bike away after dark.

All the towns near hemel are nice, hemel is not

Not in public :rofl::rofl::rofl:

Hi @kylejs I was going to suggest a council garage when I first saw this post but knew the waiting list was a long time.
To give you an idea how long, I just got an email telling me I’m still on the list and the prices have increased should I get one, I requested a garage over 2 years ago!!

Anyway, Southwark prices are now £35.50 inc VAT per week

Wow! 2 years! I did look in to council ones, but they mentioned the waiting list would be long.

The other problem I have is that if I get a garage too central it makes my insurance quite pricy.

@nivag thanks for forwarding the info, pricing and contact :beers:.

It’s still probably worth trying. Some friends did the same for an allotment. They were told it would be several years but as it cost nothing to put their names down, they did so and sat back and waited.

Six month later they got a plot.

Glad to say I’ve secured a garage in North West London! :star_struck:

Very happy with the rent, plus my insurance stayed at a reasonable price at the address.

It also has electricity inside so I can hook my battery up to a trickle charger, water supply right outside the door, CCTV, and a remote controlled gate to access the garage area.

Hopefully be able to join you all at meet-ups (when they’re back) now! :beers:

That sounds like a result.

May I suggest one other tip? Try not to park the bike outside while admiring it and taking photos. I would be reluctant to even make use of the convenient water point for washing it outside if it can been seen from the street.

Having it concealed from view in the garage is more secure than the strongest ground anchor and chain on the planet. The less you advertise its presence, the safer it will be.

I live there and I agree, it is not

Sage advice for sure, thank you!

Thankfully the garage is deep inside a residential estate, and even after that it’s tucked away in a corner out of view from the road AND with a big electric gate before you can get round into the garage area that it’s tucked away in.

None the less, will take your advice since others using the garages could see and you never know right.

Sounds good :+1:
