my bike is 600rr4, I used to have about 10.4 miles/litre for commuting every day, and 14.6 miles/litre for weekend rideout.
but I noticed my fuel economy seems to getting worse…last couple times I went to get petrol, I got about 9.2 miles/litre, and this time is 7.5 miles/litre…
I dont speeding at all, always stick with speed limit, no sudden acceleration, no racing the red light etc…
the only change of my 600rr I can think of is that my both tyres pressure were 42psi, and I made them down to 36psi, is it possibly the reason? or does it mean its time for a service…?
Lower pressure will mean more roll resistance so will make some difference. I understand the rule of thumb for cars is fuel consumption rises 1% for every 3 psi drop in tyre pressure.
We’re old school here and much prefer fuel economy expressed in real money, the maths are simple enough …
roughly roughly multiply mpl by 4.55 to get mpg or, visa versa divide mpg by 4.55 to get mpl. So we have :-
10.4 mpl = 47 mpg commuting and 14.6 mpl = 66 mpg on a weekend ride out reduced to,
9.2 mpl = 42 mpg and most recently 7.5 mpl = 34 mpg.
You’ve hit the nail right on the head with the service idea, and I’m guessing you know it’s overdue. As above the prime suspect has to be a clogged air filter but suspect anything from the air filter element to incorrect valve clearances, something between air intake and exhaust has upset the 14:1 air:fuel ratio.
I recommend signing up to Fuelly, a really good way to keep track of your fuel consumption and compare with similar vehicles.
After 6 fuel-ups of my Suzuki Bandit GSF 1250SA and 558 miles, I have averaged 36 mpg (urban riding), best was 42.3 mpg (partly rural, which makes a big difference to economy), worst 31.8 mpg total spend so far £95.08. There are several other Bandit 1250s registered and they all do better than me, but they don’t have to contend with London traffic/traffic lights/etc.
Hrm…I got 201.7 miles out of 9.81 litres (93.45mpg). You want better fuel efficiency, get a 400cc engine. Or, stick with your current bike, enjoy it lots, and forget about the fuel efficiency
