After about 6 hours riding in total on Saturday and Sunday, I still have a kind of burnt sensation on my finger tips. The pain was rampant on the motorways. I was passing infinity in Holborn today and saw some sort of wrap around or slip on heated grips that Oxford do - has anyone ever tried these? I had doubled up plastic gloves beneath my liners and my gloves, but no joy - frozen, painful fingers. So I reckon I need to invest.
Hot grips (fit 'em and leave 'em on) have been great for me. Used them for 3 yrs now and they really work for me.
However, even with them, you do get cold after a long ride. For really long rides in the cold, I wear silk inner gloves (about a tenner a pair from HG) inside my winter gloves and then put the hot grips on as well.
I’ve had a pair of those “lobster claw” gloves before, and they’re definitely warmer (no heat lost in between the fingers), but I couldn’t get over the funny feeling of not having all my fingers available. Other people use them with no bother though.
I agree, get Hotgrips instead, I have them and they really are brilliant, got mine for £40, well worth it.
I’ve been known to use mine all year round. Summer mornings and evenings can be pretty cold sometimes (or maybe I’m just very soft after all these years living darn sarf:D)
The best way to keep your hands warm is not to go riding to Southend in the snow…You must all be mental
Yep! I am mental, It was warm at Southend though,
I’m with you 100% gg:D
Right. Ta. I’ll get some - any recommendations on the best to get?
And I’ll avoid Southend if it’s snowing…
Horrible snow. Snowed on the way to Newbury, snowed in Canterbury, then rained. Yuck.
Have you got good gloves first ? Surely some good gloves will be the best solution then hotgrips if you’re still cold ? A few months ago Rex Judd were selling Alpinestars Jet Road Goretex gloves for reasonable money, everybody said they were excellent, dry and very warm.
mac p yea!
I was waiting for someone to post something like this.
On the way to Southend, I got frostbite to some degree. This was with some Tucano Urbano winter gloves (which have been great in the rain), woollen inners from a camping shop and Oxford Hot Hands (the velcro on solution).
To be honest, I would rather do without the Hot Hands as the combination of gloves already gave me a bad dose of sausage fingers, and the bulky grip covers left me with little confidence that I could control the bike sufficiently.
It seems to me that the most practical, although not aesthetically pleasing, solution might be a pair of muffs. But I would welcome suggestions on a pair of gloves that completely negates the effects (frostbite) of yesterday’s arctic ride on the A406 (while at the same time making it easy to control the bike).
I had oxford hot grips and they were brilliant (on another bike). Today was the first time I’ve had cold fingers - tempted to get some silk inners if they will fit.
Would advise against them Alpinestars, had mine two years and they are not worth the money that I paid for them. Not very warm, ok they are dry (gore-tex love it), but the insulation is extremely poor. My 20 minute commute in temperatures less than 5°C see my hands in pain from the cold.
I am still looking out for a decent pair of winter gloves, having looked around I can say they don’t seem to exist.
I have the Alpine Stars Jet Road Gortex and they’re the best winter glove I’ve had and I ALWAYS have cold hands!! They felt really thick at first but soon got used to them Got them for a great price and I have no complaints,
Oxford Hot grips combined with Hein Gericke Vulcan gloves for me, works a treat for the winter!
i can’t stand thick gloves winter is evil
What are these thick gloves I hear speak of?
Do you mean Oven gloves?:P:D
no chunky those are different you’d know that if you spent less time in the kitchen and more time on the bike.
Well forget the oxford hot hands, they are the velcro wrap around heated grips, they are rubbish!, if you are after a set get a pair of the oxford heated grips, they have a thermostat control so you can adjust the temp. Otherwise try the Tucano urbano velociraptor gloves, they are fantastic, not only are they the warmest gloves ive ever had, but they are fully waterproof. I dont bother with heated grips now, i just use these.
Well a cheapo pair of Buffalo gloves kept me warm enough in the snow from/to Southend, although I did wonder at one point if I wouldn’t have been better offf on the VFR which has heated grips. But if you want some warm gloves then the Heine Gericke Pathan (previsouly refered to as lobster gloves I believe ) are excellent. but do take some getting used to.
Gloves from Germany are suppose to be excellent, especially the HELD 2475 Snowflake Winter Motorcycle Glove which was highly recommended some months back in Ride magazine.
HELD 2570 Freezer Winter Motorcycle Glove
Is suppose to be good.

The ultimate Winter performance leather gloves. Solid protection, unrivalled comfort, dry feel, and warm. Hands stay warm thanks to the unique PrimaLoft lining. A high-tech polyester lining that is woven into an ultra-light felt. The insulation values are similar to feather down, with the advantage that it does not absorb sweat.
I might get a pair next winter.
Hope it helps.
