Front end wobble.....

Hi, was having a little ‘play’ with another biker pulling onto the A1 at Hatfield going north, came to a long sweeping bend quite rapidly and found the front end of my Blackbird was getting a little wobblerly… so eased off and normal running was resumed, also is fine a speed in a straight line. Is this me just finding the limit of the bike, riding style or a problem with bike?

Cheers

  • have you ever thrashed it this way before?

  • do you use anti-puncture gloop?- is it a new tyre?- have any balancing weights come off that you can see?- have you changed the pressures?- is there any distortion to the brake calipers, brake pads or front discs that you can see?- has the bike been in for service recently/since you last thrashed it/has the wheel been removed?

Check your wheel bearings and head bearings for play. Might also be swing arm bushes:cool:

Old tyre, no gloop, weights all there, pressures fine, has been fine with other ‘high speed’ corners possible not that hight speed though!

Could also be caused by a lot of weight on the back ie a full top box

Also to note when loaded with panniers and top box, when decelerating get more front end wobble…

See above;)

No luggage today.

If i was a betting man my 50p would be on the bearings:)

+1 - happened to me on my SV thou - got worse and worse and then ended up needing a new wheel because of all the damage it had done riding it to the garage. get it checked out! wheels are expensive…

+1

did you have all your change in one pocket?

best to split the change & put in both pockets;) or spread your butt cheeks equally over your seat to distribute the weight over the bike:D

Surely since being told about the dangers of having hard things in your pockets in case you come off, no Londonbiker would ride with loose change in their clothing? I’ve even given up carrying paper hankies in case they form a wad.

Sounds like iffy head or wheel bearings or you just simply found the limit of the performance envelope for that bike at that time.

Worn tyres affect heavy bikes more. My old Avons, which were’nt worn out but were worn, gave it a slight front wheel wobble in gentle bends at about 50 - 60MPH. A squaring back tyre can do it, and so can a stepped front.

when you find out what it was capt let me know, dont want same to happen

tend to get front wheel wobble if I nail it seems to go all light, is that big or clever ? or as chunks put it “got too much in topbox”

I had a nasty wobble on my GSXR, it was a missing balance weight on my rear wheel, 10 quid later, wheels balanced again no issues, start cheap then go for the bigger issues.

:w00t:

I’ve currently got a wheel wobble at the front at around 40-50mph. I have it booked in for a new front tyre at the weekend so am hoping it’s just a balancing issue and not bearings. I dont ride it hard enough for it to be bearings I hope…

usually these wobbles are due to worn or out of balance tyres.

When I fitted the present BT021s I have, I was in a rush and didn’t balance them.Bike gets wobbly over about 110 and over 140 weaves all over the place. All bearings are perfect…

Will be balancing them next week to tide me over til I get a new set next month.
