Went to climb aboard my trusty steed this morning and noticed it felt like the brakes were jammed on. Check the rear tyre - flat as a pancake. Direct hit with a nail through the middle of the tread. The tyre is almost new (about 300 miles on it). Can I safely get it repaired?
This reminds me why I keep a spare bike. Without the spare I would have lost a days work, which would have cost much more than a years worth insurance and tax for the second bike. Feeling smug about winning that argument with the Mrs…
as long as the nail/screw has gone in straight then it should be a pretty easy repair. if the nail/screw has gone in at an angle then more of a chance of not being repairable
So it would appear as though your second bike is the trusty steed!! lol Depends on the location on the tyre of the puncture as well, but should be ok - & £20 is to much for a puncture repair, usually £10 - you can buy a kit online though various websites and do it yourself!
£20 is actually a little under priced. we are talking about proper PERMANENT repairs sean, those little kits are emergency use only to get you to a workshop to have a proper repair done. but good try
Actually the mushroom kits are a permenant fix, same that they use in the motorcycle shops & if £20 is underpriced in London then i’m glad I live outside London at that price!
the only way to permanently repair a tyre is to remove it from the wheel, and fit a large mushroom from the inside. (after roughing up the inside of the tyre and using a vulcanising solution) them rebalance the wheel as the weight of the mushroom will throw it out.
then refit the wheel and check and adjust chain (if needed)
if you can get this done for £10 then please let me know where as I will send my puncture work there rather than doing it myself.
any other mushroom or plug that goes in from the outside is NOT the same as a proper tyre repair. if it can go in from the outside, it can go back out.
agree with Matt…let us know where you can get it done for that cheap. I think it’s 30 or 35 quid at essential rubber…and they do a great job. Better paying that than a whole new tyre.
never had a problem with plugging kits…used them all the time when I was on tippers and have used them on the 'bird and they were fine even on a trackday
@steve remind me never to do a track day with you… having seen them blow out first hand, and the resultant carnage good luck to you @TD yes that does include VAT
