Free-standing trackers

Makro have one of these things coming on offer from 7th April for £129:99 (+vat). Is that the bargain they say? (£50:00 saving according to them.)

Now these things have always seemed a good idea to me as they send you vehicle location coordinates and you can track that on google earth all on your mobile phone, but…

1: I don’t suppose you get any insurance discount as it’s probably not (rip-off) Thatcham Approved, and,
2: Would this technology be any help to the police to track/recover your bike?

Strikes me that this info is only coming to your mobile.

It would be good if the mobile networks that these devices rely upon weren’t as susceptible to obstructions.

I guess it’s better than nothing, but a proper Tracker is about £300 now I believe. It uses VHF radio, not mobile networks or GPS (both of which are prone to failure if obstructed) and the Police have the equipment on board their vehicles to access and track the device.

Really can’t see them being that helpful with the track it yourself type devices…I mean, even when presented with CCTV footage and other evidence, they weren’t too interested in the theft of my mate’s bike.

The case was closed (was barely opened).

Buy stickers? Hope you are both well.

Johnny

Pretty much the conclusion I’d come to.

Bought a little bit of self contained kit from B+Q some years back that was a disturbance alarm with a little flashing LED on a wire. Chuck the unit in the tool tray, fit the LED somewhere prominent, job done. (Didn’t bother with the alarm that often as it meant taking the seat off very gently to turn it on and off.)

But it did come with some very authentic looking stickers.

So how much are you doing them for and do you offer an LB discount?
