Free assessment rides from TVP TrafPol Motorcyclists…individuals catered for as well and there is no cost.
Official statement:
Motorcycle officers of the Thames Valley Police Road Policing Department are running a series of Observed Rides from a number of motorcycle related events and meeting venues in the Thames Valley Police area throughout the year.
These will take the form of accompanied rides out with a Police Motorcyclist over a local route.
At the end of the session, which will last for about an hour, constructive de-brief will take place covering areas for potential improvement.
There is no cost for these sessions, which will be carried out by advanced trained riders of the Thames Valley Police Road Policing Department in uniform on marked police motorcycles but don’t let that put you off, our only interest is keeping you safe and for you to continue riding for many years to come.
So why are we doing it and what do we get out of it?
Our aim is to pass on to you some piece of advice that will help you become a better rider. If your riding ability improves, the chance of you becoming another casualty statistic is greatly reduced.
There are a number of riding errors common to many of the serious injury and fatal collisions involving motorcyclists and we would like the opportunity to pass on very simple tips and precautions to greatly reduce the risk of you getting injured or worse.
How many times have you been out for a ride and thought, “That was close!”?
The corner was tighter than you thought; unexplained debris on the road or had a close shave with another road user? Although it may not have been your fault, it may have been avoidable with a little more knowledge, a riding ‘Tip.’
“It was my right of way” is little consolation if you’re seriously injured, or worse!
It is not a test and whatever your ability, it’s possible you could benefit from riding with us and hopefully, it will whet your appetite to take further training such as the Be a Better Biker scheme which is supported by both Thames Valley Police and the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership – visit www.saferroads.org for details.
Many of the organisations are also able to offer training towards a variety of advanced riding qualifications including IAM and RoSPA and insurance companies may offer discounts for holding such qualifications.
