I know this may sound like a stupid question but why do bike manufacturers not include a rear (or front) fog light set up.I ride through all weather and come from Essex into London daily, there is often fog around and I wonder how well cars or bikes behind can see me.Front fogs would also be usefull if I could get them small enough not to ruin the look of the bike.
I don’t think its a stupid question, well to the contrary. To be biking doesn’t mean that you want to expose yourself to risks you don’t have to…and I also wonder why nobody at the design departments ever thought about it or put it forward.
I know that Touratech makes fog lights for touring enduros like the Kawasaki Versys and BMW GS; they were on the bikes of the three riders of the long way down. I think that they even look quite good and maybe can be adapted to other bikes as well. Here is the search result on their homepage with lights for a ton of different bikes:
I don’t really know about a specific rear fog light, but at the NEC bike show I saw a second LED brake light for under the license plate. It was possible to make it give written messages to the traffic and came with an additional, independent switch to the main brake light. You can also set it to light up in its entirety so instead of a text it just lights up like a second brake light. Because the intensity of the brake light and the fog light usually are the same (hence they are mostly set some centimeters apart on cars so you still can see when a car is braking), I suppose that you can switch it to be always on and use it as a fog light. More information you can get at www.audicator.com . Just please don’t forget it to turn it off again when the fog is gone, so you don’t glare people behind you and your brake light is more evident.
Most car shops sell mini fog lights that with thought could be fitted onto a bike, Im just too lazy to do it !! should do really and I bet they even do small fog lights if you look.
I’ll have to have a good look round to see if there are any realy small front fogs and rear fog that cann be wired seperately.Any help would be useful as I am no mechanic.
They look good,I wonder if there will be enough clearace behind the fairing as I would have to cut holes or make a bracket but not sure where it would fit.
Hi I found them on a Honda trial bike forum. Not sure where they are from so am having to join th group so I can ask the person that posted it.I like the look of them though. Not sure if they are any good ?
Thats what I was thinking as well. I rode home the other morning after a 12hr night shift in the fog and ice and crapped it.maybe some extra lighting will be good.
Halfords do a range of lights - have a look in the car styling sections - extra lights are a popular mod for adventure sports type bikes - Touratech are just to expensive though!!!
Also check ebay. try online shops like Busters too. They sell all the other bits you need like a separate waterproof switch to operate them with.
One thing to consider is the potential for extra load on your bikes electrical system - high power lights draw more power so you need to sure yours will cope on some makes of bikes the regulator / rectifier can be a weak point. I’m no expert though so get some proper advice
Good point macp, perhaps if we manage to find some at halfords or busters someone on here could give advice on wiring etc and getting ya battery to cope with extra load.
