Has anyone flown on an airliner with a lid?
Is there any tricks that might allow one to take a lid as hand luggage rather than hold cargo?
Size seems to be a restricting factor.

I took mine to Australia as hand luggage last month with no problems. It fits nicely into the bottom of a Knox backpack that I have. It was well within the restrictions.

I’ve flown once with a lid, took it as-is as normal hand luggage. This was last year on AeroFlot from UllanBaatar to Heathrow, in transit via Moscow - so perhaps not the most stringent of airports.
Didn’t have any bother landing at Heathrow with it, nor boarding anywhere else. Obviously at no point did I put it on (though it was reassuring to have it with Aeroflot).
I can’t see how they could refuse it on size, and you could make a very good argument for why you’re not checking it in. And they weigh hardly anything. I personally wouldn’t worry about it.

If it’s an open face helmet try wearing it through check-in… just tell them your a nervous flyer 
I,ve taken mine as hand luggage several times with no problems.
I’ve flown with mine in as hand luggage with both BA and Ryanair and had no problems.
On one occasion I’ve packed it into my large kitbag to go in the hold. I put it in the box it came in, and surrounded with clothes/towel etc and had no problems - that was when they were funny about hand luggage during the terrorist aftermath. I’d always prefer to take it as hand luggage though.

Can’t give you a definitive answer I’m afraid Chunks, everyone gives a different answer but all the check-in girls say the same, smile and be nice and you’ll be amazed what they let you get away with :w00t: It’s not so much them as BAA and not sure a smile will get you far with the search men!!

Ha ha! You’ve got some of those too… love it!! There’s about 20 of us from work off to Dublin with the ‘pikey airline’ and we’ve paid zilch too! Hmm, wonder if they have a first class?!
