Float bowl gasket - options?

Short story, my float bowl gaskets have stretched (must have reacted to carb cleaner or something?)

Anyway, since they seem to be 22 quid each and I need 4, I am looking at my options.

Current best (?) idea is to use a liquid gasket, fill the ‘channel’ the ring style gasket sits in with a bead of it and wait for it to set a little before putting the bowls back on (otherwise I can see myself having half a bowl full of sealant just waiting to block the jets).

Can anyone recommend a liquid gasket that isn’t silicone based and doesn’t react to petrol? Or does anyone have any better solutions?

Cheers,
Alex.

Found the seals elsewhere for 4 quid each…

…still would be interested in a petrol-proof sealant though.

Well done:)

For future reference I’ve made them out of a bit of innertube before.

Place the floatbowl face down on the flattened rubber, tap it with a happer and that leaves an imprint of the shape for you to cut round. bang the screws through their holes to get the hole positions

Would inner tube be thick enough? …and are you talking about cycle or motorbike inner tube (cause I’ve never seen a motorbike one and they may be thicker…

These are about 2mm thick I’d guess.

Cant remember to be honest, was quite a while back when every bike had innertubes;)

Stick in a Google for “petrol proof sealant”. Lots on offer.

+1

There’s petrol proof and there’s ‘petrol proof’. I’d rather have something that someone can say works rather than petrol pissing out of my carbs/**** gumming up my float bowls!

What about this then?

Interesting. “Resistant to most automotive fluids”. Does that include petrol?

(The site was so slow loading that I didn’t wait, so if it says that later, eventualy, ignore this post.)

get some Hylomar Blue that **** is gd… you can get it in texaco fuel stations car shops etc etc…

I used to swear by Hylomar for most jointing jobs 40 years ago, so did Rolls Royce aero div then, just thought there should be something better out there by now.

I guesss this stuff is like Swarfega. Still good after all these years.

tried and tested can’t go wrong:)
