Flat Battery???

Hi,

Sorry to bother all but got a quick question…

I hadn’t ridden the bike for about 11 days (stored away under cover). Tried to start it up this morning- first time around the engine was struggling to start up w/ choke. went away for a bit to check manual etc. - tried to start up again, and now no noise from engine/starter etc. at all - ocasionally a clicking noise coming from engine…

I knows its probably a stupud q but I’m absolutely dozy with mechanics/maintainance…Diagnosis = dead/flat battery?? Lights are working fine though…

11 days is not long enough to flat your battery, maybe you did what I did some time ago. I just left me bike

on parking lights and after 10 hours battery went flat. I suggest you to charge your battery and see.

I’d second that and depending on how old the battery is, you way want to think about investing in a new one.

Battery is month, or less than month old. How much power does an immobiliser consume?

If it’s not the battery it could be the immobiliser.

2 things…

  1. was is de-armed? (you wouldn’t be the first person to forget they rearm themselves);

  2. the immobiliser could be faulty.

Sounds like a flat battery to me.

The clicking noise you can here when you press the start button is the starter relay clicking. If there’s not enough power in the battery, the relay can’t contact and complete the starter circuit.

Buy an Optimate for about £25 - £30 and keep it hooked up to keep the battery in tip top condition. Any alarm or other device will drain a battery within a few weeks.

Thanks for the advice.

Just looked at it again and think I’m going to have to purchase a charger then (yep, don’t have one)…Not going to be my day though - got off bike w/o putting stand down and nearly dropped it - landed on my shin/thighs (need to invest in R&G’S while I’m at it!) and then came back home cheesed off…leaving keys in ignition.

Any recommendation for where to buy a optimate…esp. if from the net cos’ they seem to be £45-50 everywhere

Depend what you have fitted on the bike. Try Tracker and alarm and 11 days is a long time…

£29.99 plus £5.00 postage…

A quick trawl through the net says the Green Reaper.co.uk is the cheapest supplier for the Optimate III.

hi mate

had the same problem with my r6. its only a year old. found in the cold weather when it wasn’t used that much would struggle to start. i brought an optimiser. left it on charge for a day and starts up everytime now.

you can wire it up so that you just have the connector under the seat so you don’t need to get the battery out everytime. theY are really good. paid about £45 - £50.

hope that helps

Cheers all…Ordered an optimiser which should be here in a few days. Had a feeling it was the battery (hopefully it is) but the clicking noise had me worried.

Battery flat is a 99% probability - but it could be a dirty (too much low-battery arcing) contact in the starter relay - it’s even more interesting when they weld permanently on! It could also just be a poor battery contact - but I’m assuming that’s been checked already.
