In my experience, when a ped has walked out on front of me and suddenly seen my coming in their direction and having to slam the brakes on, they usuallyu look all indignant as if I’m in the wrong ?!:w00t:
when i filter, i pretty much consatntly blip my throttle, teh baffle less blueflame can clears teh path well! when i come up to bus’s at a stop i also blip my throttle…alot…its definetly worth doing, on my scoot, wich was very quite in comparison, i alwasy had lemmings…sorry peds…walking out in front of me, not a problem on teh thumper! (SV)
i know where you are coming from, but i did everything right (confirmed by the cops observing), just thought about riding around them for a split second which slowed down breaking reaction, hence the 2mm from serious problems
mind you from the laws point of view, even with a cops statement in support, if anything/one had been hit i bet my insurance would have apportioned blame to me
in the end the main thing is they were not hurt and i will learn some valuable lessons
you know, i’ve been thinking about a new can and this was a scenario that a bit of noise might have helped, of course the cops may have done me for the can but peeps being safer is worth it
always v.slow around bus stops, ppl always jump out like lemmings
+1
also read an article in Bike mag - 2 journos had been debating it for years until the one had a cabbie about to u-turn on him who shouted something to the effect of ‘good job I heard you or I’d have hit you!’ as he passed by with his loud cans… I don’t use mine to clear a path whilst trying to filter by revving when I’m being held up as some do, but I do find it useful to alert road-users and peds alike when needed.
i dont sit behind cars revving either, i may blip once or twice to see if they will move, thats about it tho, i do however use my can to let people know im there, works wonders, just ask no1 sr fan:D
…wasn’t referring to you mate:)
More about the experiences I’ve had where some riders thinks it’s their right to get through and give it loads even when the traffic is stopped and has nowhere to move…
i know i should have worded that better, i know what ya mean, fella this morning i was behind, he was tapping on car windows and gesturing for them to move over! i though he was taking teh **** to be honest, i mean if you wanna make progress that bad LOOK for gaps!
Just like other road users, we are at the mercy of those in larger vehicles than ours. If the situation was between car and bike rather than bike and ped, would people be rushing to declare the absent minded biker an irresponsible fool?
Pedestrians are even more vulnerable than us, so even if they disregard the law (and common sense ) and step into the road when not at a designated crossing (‘jaywalking’?), they will still come off worse than us in a collision.
I wouldn’t mind playing Death Race sometimes though!
Sure you did, as you avoided a collision.
Sorry, didn’t want to give the impression you’re in the fault, just saying it’s a very common occurence, so you did the right thing to learn from it and from now on expect it to happen.
TBH, I think the cops probably just stop you to see if you were a careless type or just hadn’t seen the pedestrian as it sounds like it was a near miss.
well i did everything to *prepare * ‘right’ according to training and what i have read but will try to be more decisive in my reaction to pedestrians in future, was too close for comfort
