I’m taking my bike test in two weeks time and if i pass (fingers crossed) I’m thinking about getting the Honda cbr600rr, a few people i have spoken to have said this bike would be too much for me as a first bike being a new rider.
Just wondered what bikers on this site thought, i would appreciate any feedback as i really want to get this bike.
I don’t think it’s due to the power. My CBR600F isn’t too far behind in the power stakes and it’s a great first bike.
I can’t ride an RR as I can’t get my knees behind my ears! :w00t:
I think the issue is that for a first bike you need to be comfortable and in a riding position where you have easy and full control. The sportier sport bikes are, IMHO, just too extreme for a newbie.
I’ve now been riding for about 5 months (6k miles) and it’ll be a while before I can say I’ve mastered the 600F. I think the RR is just a step to far for a first bike.
I’m sure others have done it and been sucessfull but I reckon more have tried and binned it. Play it safe. Get a load of miles under your belt and then think about moving up the ladder. Don’t try and go in too high to start with
that is not quite true. Some people can’t control their urges. It might be too fast, you can get into trouble very quickly on a sports bike, but then you could just as easily kill yourself on a 50cc scooter. It depends on the rider.
My first bike is a sport 600. I did not have big problems up to now; but every time I need to go somewhere and I am in hurry I avoid this bike - might be too dangerous and I find difficult to control the speed.
I bought a ‘soft’ sports 600 (Triumph Daytona 600, not the newer 675) as my first bike, was a great bike but binned it 6 days later. Asked around and everybody just said get another 600 so I did, a 2007 ZX6R. That was a mistake, there’s a massive difference between a 2006-2007 sports 600 and a 2000-2002 sports bike. They’re not the same things at all although they look similar.
Look at a 3 or 4 year old gsxr600 or ZX6, better still a CBR600F, Thundercat or SV650 which are road bikes that are quick and sporty as opposed to a sports/track bike which is road legal.
I had a CG 125 til I passed my test then I bought my K4 600 GSXR - Never looked back or wished I’d gone for something smaller or slower, you have to be careful but you can say the same about any bike you buy - any bike will seem fast when you pass your test, I thought my CG was fast when I 1st got it!
If a 600 RR is what you want I say go for it, if you dont you’ll only regret it.
I agree with Adz that it totally depends on the respect you have as a rider. Honda’s are notoriously forgiving bikes, therefore you may well find riding an RR to be OK but then again, a quick, incorrect twist of the throttle and you might well be off – but that is the case with all bikes
You will only know how you feel about it, after you have ridden a few different types of bikes. I do have to say that you don’t often hear of people choosing an RR as a first bike
I’ve got Daytona 675 as my first bike ever. Passed my licence week before
I was going mad on it when I bought it, flatted it out on m40 just after my 500 miles service. I knew I couldn’t ever go any faster so concentrated more on conrners and technique… If you have repect to your bike and can control throttle you will be fine. If you start riding it like an idiot you won’t live long.
It’s probably easier to learn on smaller, cheaper bike, dropping it is less expensive etc. On the other side I dropped mine and it cost me 400 to fix it so not that bad.
Get the bike you want and you think will be suitable for you. Don’t listen to others, you may consider their advices but everything is in your head and it should be your decison. Why to buy a bike you don’t like ?. You know what type of person your are so decission on bike shouldn’t be hard. Enjoy riding!
My bike is a CBR600F, it’s my 1st and I love it, has enough power for a 1st bike not to get bored within a couple of months but not enough to make you soil your pants!! I had thoughts of getting something a bit more powerful but then my common sense kicked in
I did have a sneeky go on a GSXR thou and a Blade yesterday at the Ace, scary, but wicked bikes, so much power. Sorry Martinn but the GSXR was my fave, don’t hate me You should have seen the look on some of the blokes faces at the Ace, they must have thought Kev & Martinn were crazy to be letting some dappy blonde bird have a go on their baby’s they both came back in one piece though
My thundercat lapped/outdragged many bigger more modern bikes at Brands…its very similar to the F…
But getting back OT, a brand new RR as a first bike is OK if you really want to, however, you will become a much better rider if you learn on something that is not so sharp, as chunky said, any 2000 ish sports bike will do you well, and with the money you save on the insurance can go for more training, trackdays, etc.
I can’t understand why poople don’t trust me on this field I know that after having a go on Ricki’s R1 the engined blew up but it wasn’t me I didn’t go faster than 110 and used only 2 gears.
I repect other people’s bikes. Can I have a go Martinn or Kev ? Pelase
My husband got a cbr600 f (2000reg) for his first bike a year and a half ago and its been a really good bike. He has visions of moving on to a cbr600rr soon but the credit card says no! Few of his mates started on much newer bikes and although in thoery thier bikes should be quicker (all 600’s), his cbr600 still out does them in lots of areas. I dont know if its the rider or what but he was fine on a 600 as a first bike. As afew of these fine gentlemen have said, it all depends on how much control you have over your right wrist and that you’re confident to ride a ‘big’ bike!!!
