First Bike Need Advice :)

Heya i am thinking about getting my first bike as im normally a pillionpassenger. Im quite short im like 5’4 or 5’5 and i can only ride a 125cc as im a learner.

I was wondering what bike should i buy i was thinking a dirtbike but my mate said my feet wouldnt touch the floor because im so short.

But do you think my feet would touch the floor if i got a Yamaha yzf 125cc.

Thanks x

if your looking for a first bike with a low seat height id say the ybr 125 or the cg 125…
the yzf is abit pricey for just a 125. but it all depends on how long you want to keep the bike for.

iv got a ybr125 … and when i dropped it there was practically no damage on it.
if you drop a yzf ur looking at fairing damage too unless u get crash bungs.
cbr125’s are low too

good luck on finding a bike

Let’s get things into perspective. You’re not much shorter than the publisher/road tester of The Riders Digest and John’s ridden almost everything from Aprilias to Yamahas and clocks up an unfeasible mileage every year.

Forget what your mates say, just go chuck a leg over whatever you fancy and see if it fits, or even “fits-ish”.

If you want a street moto, go try them for size. They may look tall and feel a bit daunting but they’re not.

It’s all about adapting and confidence and knowing you can/will do it. I’ve ridden a Paris/Dakar prep’d BMW and could not get my (32" inside leg) feet or even toes on the ground. When I stopped, I had to half slide across the seat to get one foot down with my bum half off the seat.

O.K. I’ve been doing this stuff for years (read “decades”) and I don’t suggest that you try the BMW, but those little 125 street moto’s, particularly the Yamahas, are a delight.

If you want to; just do it. You know you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Generally speaking Supermotos are a lot higher. They often have narrower seats, which makes it a bit easier to reach the ground.

A yamaha XT might be slightly too high although they drop a lot when you sit on it.

Aprilia SX125 would def be too high,

which leaves us with the YBR/ CBF. Even if you feel a bit uncomfy and find it a stretch, you will get confident and find it a lot easier with time.

Never sat on a VanVan, but they look low

You’re not wrong alex, the seat height is defo low. I was practically dragging my knees on the floor on ours, but then I am 6’3" !)

Actually picked up another bike this week so our vanvan is going up for sale if you’re looking for a clean one. Planning on doing some picks for autotrader/eBay this weekend

If you’re not sure which bike that is it’s the one in the NoToTheBikeTax pic to the right, same colour

Make sure you post it up here, I might know someone who would be interested

will do fella!

Hey there Chicka,

I’m still riding my yamaha r125. I’ve had it since September 09. I’m bigger than you at 5’10 but I can get both feet flat on the ground. You will have no problems with getting a leg down either side, and perhaps both on the balls of your feet.

Out of interest, where do you live? I’ve bought my ‘big bike’ now as i’m hoping to pass my full test in a week. I’m in west london, you could always come and have a sit on it and see what you think (she’ll also be up for sale after she’s back from a service over the weekend).

Oh, also the CBR125 I tried was quite a bit lower. If you find the R125 is a bit tall or you dont feel secure on it then the CBR125 is a good alternative.

For me it felt like a bit of a monkeybike, my knees were really bent when I was sat on it with my feet down. But for you perhaps its just right. Great bikes as I used one for commute for a while - but didn’t have the appeal of the R125 for me.

Arguably the CBR125’s position and slightly easier controls are better for a learner, but I like to skip a step or two where possible
