You can always cut out enough room in the polystyrene of most helmets for the earpieces and the actual earpieces can be dismantled a bit to aid fitting. Bit fiddly but can be done and obviously may affect capability of lid a little if too much chopped out!
Note ref power sockets…if this is a preferred route you can always fit female socket off BMW models to yours (need to splice BMW cables into circuit but can be done) into sidepanel/plastics etc and then use Autocom socket to plug in and play…does save on battery power especially if on long trips/groups etc
The earpieces are quite large on the £105 (that’s rider & pillion btw, so you don’t need to buy anything else, just a 9V battery) set, ca. 4cm x 2cm x 0.5cm, so not sure if I should be cutting that much out of the polystyrene.
Tbh, I’ll always have open face helmets, well at least when I’m out on my sexy scooter, but I’ll just have to make sure my next helmet has little space there. Just so not spending £250 on an Arai open face one, when I can pick up a perfectly good one in Italy for 30 euros. My Vespa one was £100 here and 60 euros in Italy, bl00dy rip off in this country.
Hmmm, perhaps I should buy the Autocom thing as an investment…
You around tomorrow lunchtime-ish Babe? I’m out and about and around Gt Portland St around 1.30-ish. Possible you could have a look at my helmet and see if any bodging could be done without compromising on the safety?
Fraid not babe…celebrating ma B-Day with the other half tomorrow but I know the helmet you have so ill have a play with the one we have at work for ya and let you know…you said you have six!!! I dont suppose one of them is a Dainese D-Jet at all???
those earpieces can be split open and then (if memory correct) actual size of speaker about 10pence size and 1cm deep so not as much to remove. Good quality model knife, double sided tape, to stick lining back together and a lot of patience. Depending on how bothered you are about finish! May have to see some gaffa tape or similar to hold boom on securely. So could be an issue as I’m sure you wouldn’t want to ruin your style, but thats the problem if you don’t have a lid with provision to fit this!
I’ve got two Vespa ones and loads of cheap, but legal, Italian open face ones, really simple ones.
The lining is stiched/glued to the leather thing (sort of horizontal under the helmet) and just folded inside the helmet up to ear level. From then up, there’s no lining to talk about, just a mesh to keep the hair from sticking to the polystyrene. The lining’s held in place because the polystyrene is sticky.
I just had a look at both my Vespa ones, and it looks like it’s not the thickness of the earpiece causing the problem (I don’t think it was even 1cm thick, more like 0.5cm), as I managed to squeeze a finger in, but the length of the earpiece at 4cm, so entire length of the ear (well, apart for Prince Charles, obviously), and there isn’t space at the top of my ear level for anything, but there is space where the actual ear is. It just squeezes the top of my ear too much, so if I can either cut the polystyrene there or cut 0.5cm off the earpiece, I could be in business.
So, Babe, you’re not in tomorrow at all, or just not at lunchtime? How about Fri/Sat? I’m due to go to the NEC now either Fri/Mon, once Pixie tells me when she’s going, so if it’ll be Monday, will you be around Friday to do any necessary bodging?
Have a look at Autocom website for dealers and distributors. Can’t tell you which one is nearest to you, as don’t know where Enfield is: http://www.autocom.co.uk/
Morning all…I’m back heheh Yeah youre radio wont be a problem with the Autocom as long as it uses normal headphones…and unfortunately no you cant get extra discount 'cos its already half price thats just being greedy!
Now all of you go and buy one from me at GPS…its great…spent all morning yesterday riding along listening to me ipod
Its a bit fiddly and I dont think its quite right the way ive fitted it in…needs some fine tuning methinks…but the sound quality is amazing…I have it on a lower sound setting than my headphones!!! AND i can still hear the traffic fine…although I found i did have to remind myself to look in my mirrors more often…like being trained again …and to stop singing as it switches the mike on and you hear yourself singing along to the music!!! LOL portable Karaoke or what!!! But for the money you just have to get one…I bought Kit 6 so just run it off a 9v battery…later I can expand it to go on the bike, I can add my phone, ipod and even gps and expand it for bike to bike if I needed too!!! All i need now is another headset for spare lid (other half nicks me Corsair!!) an sorted!!
Plus if I ever get a lift with someone who has it on their bike I can plug in and have a chat
enough as long as you dont all turn up at the same time…NO REALLY BUY ONE…im so impresssed with it…have always thought it was only for ‘bearded BMW’ riders …but now its half price…best bit of kit ive ever got for the bike…will make taking nervous pillions easier…and get to listen to tunes too
