Exup valve

My Brother took his Thunderace in for a service today and was told that the Exup valve is stuck solid, they couldn’t even get it out with heat.

Has been quoted £250 - £300 for a replacement to be fitted, was just wondering if anyone knows where he could buy a decent used one or is not worth the hassle.

You could probably buy the downpipes with the EXUP valve off ebay for that price.

That’s where I’d look first…It’s not a difficult job working on the exhaust system.

Here ya go…I did a search for you on ebay…EXUP motor and cable are both £1.99 each (current bid) and the down pipes are just over £12.

Get a haynes manual for the bike here http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=13703&langId=-1

Off the top of my head theres a 6mm thread going into the side of the valve. You can pull it out (the valve) by using a slide hammer with a 6mm thread attachment on it.

Ok, I’ve got the actual valve out of the exhaust but the problem is the valve is stuck solid to the housing where the cables connect.

The gear for sale on Ebay is the motor not the actual valve.

So I’m still looking.

Can you post a photo of the problem item and tell me what material each item is made of please.

is it stuck fully open,if so leave it like that,if it is not try and get it so it is fully open.

as most of my bikes i have had with exups vavles i have taken them out, mainly as i run a fully system,or leave it fully open and take the cables off.

it does the bike no harm

The valve was stuck in the open position which was good but below 7k revs it felt really strangled.

The problem is that my Brother has only recently passed his test so he is riding the bike off the midrange so this strangled feeling is a big problem.

Anyway, I have listened to loads of advice and I’m going to cut the valve away and save the housing.

So it looks like a couple hundred quid for a new valve.

£450 ish last time I had one but if you do as I asked I may be able to tell you how to sort it.

Here it is.

Is it Ali or steel?

It looks like some kind of bronze alloy

They’re steel and if it’s twisted in any way at all when being removed, it’s pretty much scrap. There’s a special grease that needs to go on them when they go back in too. £450 is ludicrous, you sure they aren’t doing you for the downpipes as well?

You are dead right, £450 is madness.

I have been quoted £205 for the valve but I’m looking to pick up a used one hopefully.

Zanx, I know there is an exup grease you can buy but the Yamaha dealer and websites I’ve looked at have said copper slip is fine. Would you agree??

Weets, I never actually repaired it, sold the bike to a mate who then left it for 6 months and it seized. If it’s out, then I’d be inclined to take it to an engineers and see if they can true it for you. Basically the pins at either end have to be dead in line with each other or it won’t rotate properly. The design of the valve means it’s easy to bugger up trying to get it out.

It’s possible to separate the valve from the housing you have there, again, a small engineering shop will press it out for you. We used an anvil and a big hammer but not everone has 90kg anvils nowadays.
