excess engine oil

Hi all,

so while i was cleaning the drive chain i checked the oil and i got shocked:

the cb400sf has the disptick and i did as follow:

warm the engine for a couple of minutes, turn it off and let it settle for few more minutes, bike upright and put the dipstick in…

the bike could hardly stand upright without dropping oil!!!

it was full till the border, on the sidestand is fine but i’m pretty sure it has to be checked with the bike upright…

this morning i took 250ml out but still have a lot of oil, later i’ll buy a half litre bottle and do it again…

the previous owner showed me the recepit of the oil bought in july 2011, how the hell has this bike running since then???

how do i know if i broke some gasket or have any damage???

Should be checked when upright . You probably have not damaged anything . Get it right level and it should be okay . You dont check your oil often enough

I bought the bike beginning of April, i didn’t imagine i could be overfilled…

the dipstick has a line at the very bottom, then another after 1 cm or less, then it remain flat for another cm and then become round

the second line is the max, not when from flat becomes round, right??

yes you need to be between the two lines

As long as it wasn’t squirting out everywhere when you were riding I would have left it.

I would not leave it . Way to much oil can cause overheating as the oil cooler cant cope with the quantity .

By the way listen to NumNum because I always take the easy option :). Forgot to mention that earlier.

the thing is that is not just above the line, it’s so full that if the bike is upright it spills, unbelievable!!!

You should have checked it before purchase … Then haggle off another couple of hundred on the grounds the previous owner was a flump

It is not a good thing but excess is much better than too little !
I never heard of it causing any problems in 35 years working on bikes but I would still drop the level
Yes it should be between the two lines but I would always aim to have it at the upper line or a little only a little over

Why did you warm the engine? Does your bike have a separate oil tank? If not, then this is unnecessary for a sumped engine, and in fact will not give you an accurate indication of the level.

Yesterday I checked warming up the engine for 1 2 min and then wait few more minutes, this morning i checked from cold and it was more less the same, couldn’t stand upright without spilling…

When i get home i will check the bottle of oil i took out to see if i can notice other liquids inside, even though the coolant level is fine so it should be ok…

Over filling can lead to blown gaskets and seals so remove any excess oil.

Also, probably not the case but can happen with some liquid cooled bikes, check that the bike is warming up quickly and also check that the oil does not smell of petrol.

If the thermostat fails open in the cooling system the engine never heats up properly, or takes a very long time to do so fuel can collect i nthe sump. Whilst the engine is running cold extra fuel is injected to compensate. Because the engine isn’t warm, the rings never seal 100% and some of the fuel passes the rings. Whilst all this happens a small amount in normal warming, the warming engine will cause the fuel to evaporate and leave by the crankase breather. If the engine can’t warm up, or the breather is blocked the fuel just builds up and builds up. It does two things, dilutes the oil affecting lubrication, and rots plastic components. In the Master engine in my bike for example, it is a known problem that can cause the oil pump to fail if ignored.

Actually when turning off the engine i notice a very little leak from a breather near the head gasket, very liquid and almost transparent, 1 or 2 drops max…

If it’s over the max when cold, and the bike’s level, then you definitely have too much oil, and you need to lower that level immediately. As has already been pointed out by others, your can blow seals due to the increased crankcase pressure…expensive and inconvenient!

Sorry that is an old wife’s tale unless the breather is completely blocked no problem

In over 30 years trade experience I seen lots of very overfilled engines and none have blown gaskets or seals
if you really overfill you can get oil in the breather system and the air filter but that takes like double the recommended quantity or more !!

Yup … I agree … Only thing I have acutally seen was overheating . Accidentally let the oil run for 4 hours into a Mirlees 16 cyl TBank from the auto changer but without the drain being open … it caused the temprature to rise due to cooler unable to cool the quantiy of oil that was getting heated . No damage done fortunatley… but a lesson in why not to get smashed on pills and booze while on engine room watch

In exceptional circumstances, over full sumps can lead to the crank hitting and frothing the oil.

(Can’t remember which car manufacturer is was that cocked up some years back but they had some pretty heavy warranty claims,)

I’d just drain the thing off and put the right amount of new stuff and a new filter in. At least then you know the job has been done properly and forget that as a problem.

so yesterday i took all the oil in excess: 1.25 litre !!!

I have some receipts from the previuos owner with all the mantainance works and i saw a receipt of 4l oil, while in the manual it says only 2.9l… unbelievable

I’m going to check the airfilter later for any sign of oil, however i noticed that the outside of the carb bowl on the left is slightly dirty, it’s a bit sticky and it doesn’t look like petrol, more like oil (i’m wondering if oil could penetrate though the air filter all the way to the carb???), the carbs on the right side are fine…

After too much of my life spent working on blasted engines (I’ve pretty much given up now) and can say without much risk of contradiction, who knows?

Just change the air filter, clean everything up, (including the inside of the crankcase vent and pipe) and you can tick another service box.

If the bikes running nicely, why worry? Just clean and service as you go and you will have soon got everything fixed.
