This is a classic. Heās gonna spend time learning French; I wonder how he will get on when he hits another country like Spain or Germany?
I think this line sums the guy up āMr Boyle said he could not explain in words the disappointment he felt at abandoning the journey and he apologised to his supporters.ā He cannot even articulate himself in his own language.

i mean, lets put aside that its a crap wannabeatreehugger idea, but surely even basic preparation would involve creating a small phrase book for all the languages used on his intended and back up route?even a simple paragraph outlining his plan translated into each language would have gotten him further

Hmmm. Mixed feelings about this one.
Pilgrimages, in history have been undertaken to Campostella, Rome, Constantinople, Jerusalem and probably further afield by pennyless pilgrims. Iāll bet that not all of those spoke all of the languages, but they have the bond of the religious pilgrims.
Laurie Lee hiked across Spain in the late thirties having arrived with no language, but he did have a violin that he could play (rather well) to earn money.
Times and attitudes change though.
On balance a plonker. But the world needs a few plonkers every now and then.
