Just saw a bunch of little scrotes nicking a blue Enduro style bike outside a block of flats on Newcastle Row. Tried to stop them by shouting out of my office window and got a load of abuse in return, nice! Called the police immediately and they turned up pretty quickly. Unfortunately they got away by then
Were there about 4 or 5 of them with hoodies, aged about 14? I caught a bunch of them showing quite an interest in my bike the other evening, they scarpered when I challenged them, and the police showed up shortly afterwards looking for them. I’m not sure who called them.
Yes, it was 5 of them, aged between 14 and 16 I’d say. Although, it’s hard to tell these days.
I wish I could have done more, but our office is on the top floor and the actual entrance is on a different road all together, so it would have taken me way too long to get to them… I decided to call the police instead and give them an accurate description of the bike, the kids and where they were heading. The operator even called me back to thank me for reporting it.
It was unbelievable how calm and collected the kids were when I challenged them, cool as a cucumber…
You did the right thing there… Trying to challenge 5 people, even though they’re technically still ‘kids’ could have ended pretty bad for you as there’s always the chance they will stand their ground and cause you grief for interrupting their ‘work’…
Yes, I guess they might be Jamie. I was surprised how quickly the police reacted and reading your post suggests that they are probably well aware of them. Didn’t you have trouble in the past with someone trying to steal your bike?
Serrisan, you might be right there but I am a firm believer in challenging people when they are doing something wrong. I find it appalling that in today’s society people get away with murder, literally, and no one bothers to intervene. Stories of women getting sexually assaulted on the tube with tonnes of people around, makes me furious I know it’s stupid to get yourself into unnecessary danger, but if we all turn a blind eye, where is it going to end?
Couldn’t agree more… but you need to know where you can challenge someone and where the best option would be to get someone more equipped to deal with the situation.
Taking on 5 individuals is never going to end in your favour…
As much as I would love to say yes, it wasn’t him Three of the kids were white, two black. One of them had a black helmet. They were your usual hoody types. Sorry for stereotyping here, I know I shouldn’t, especially since I got stopped once by the police wearing a hoody and baggy jeans, looking at my other half’s car :w00t:
What I don’t understand here is a group of kids seam to be working a small area, why don’t the police set up a sting operation with a bait bike then wait?
It’s not that hard to work out how to catch them, and the scooter gang in SE London could be caught the same way, but then I suppose the old bill are too busy with sting operations catching smokers in company vehicles!
I agree with you mate, though the SE London lot would be hard to deal with given the area covered, but around Clerkenwell there’s only a small area and they seem to live local. I’ve seen 3 of the little fookers (one white, one black & one mediteranean), the police must know who they are.
