El Bandito Queries, Don't want my wallet emptied, anyone had the same...

Right,

So i’ve got a GSF650s, 2005. Due to my age it’s restricted to 33bhp (carb tops)

A few months back, I noticed that the plate on the exhaust at the joint between the downpipes and the end can, had fallen off.

Now, when taking it for new chain/sprockets the other day (to Burwins motorcycles in Angel - thoughts on these guys???) I was told that this is a common problem with Suzuki’s of this age and with this exhaust system. And that once this happens the system begins to rot, in fact I was shown the hole that had rotted through (in the joining part). Apparently the downpipes are stainless steel, as is the end can, but the joining part is normal steel, thus why it rots. Now I can see and hear for myself that there is a hole. This is an MOT failure I’m told which I don’t doubt at all. I asked if exhaust tape will get it through but he said it wouldn’t. Can it be welded? He said that he thinks the downpipes will need replacing… Now I don’t get that is he trying to rip me off surely the joining part can just be replaced.

Can anyone shed some light on the situation as of course it needs sorting but obviously I don’t want to spend money I don’t have to or more than I have to. And I hate the idea of someone trying to take me for a ride.

Oh and one more thing, being a small hole in the exhaust, does this mean that the 33bhp restriction is inaccurate, making more power now perhaps?

Any help muchos appreciated

im sure you can just repalce the bit thats rusted rather than the down pipes.why would you need to replace the down pipes if theirs nout wrong with them

if its just a plate then it will be fine, if the actual exhaust is rotten then mot fail.

show us a pic, but as said above should be able just to change said part.

I’ll get a pic taken tomorrow.

Annoyingly it’s the actual pipe thats got a hole in, the plate has just fallen off.

I didn’t understand why he was talking about the downpipes as well. Oh though he did say once the join goes, the rest will follow, maybe thats why. But i’m suspicious like you guys.

If you do have to replace your downpipes, whatever you do don’t buy them from the dealer. You are fortunate that your bike is one that people like to customise so there is usually no shortage of stock spares (especially exhaust systems) on ebay for reasonable prices, downpipes for your bike should be about £80.I got a new stock exhaust in mint condition for my Bandit 1250 for about £20 last summer :hehe: from the dealer they’re about £600 :w00t:

Burwins are pretty sound guys, they always serviced my mates bandit ( rode from tunbridge to angel everday), nevert heard anythign bad about them at all.

normally stock pipes are crap steel too.

get a magnet if it sticks to pipes then steel if not prob stainless, if steel some 1 might be able to weld over for temp measure.

it is repairable that bit is mild steel so rots get someone to weld a bit of stainless tube on it got mine done for fourty quid a few years back had mine done though chadwell motorcycles hardest bit is getting the pipes off

Arh yes did tell me to spray the bolts once a week for the next few weeks to help when it comes to getting em off. Welding sounds best, would any garage be able to do it?
