earth tremor

Lucky girl:D

I suppose the government is going to blame ‘Global Warming’ and now hike up some tax’s somewhere :doze:

go look if you think its funny. me thinks you got your head in thesand…http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2007/aug/07/disastersAnd yes we have earth quakes all over the planet many thousands of them very small but anything above a 3-4 is starting to get serious, a 5 is heading into building damage and other trouble…

Yep, my fella called me at 1:15am to ask if I felt anything… (yeah, go on Chunks. I dare you).

He was in Peterborough at the time and went outside just to check if he was actually imagining it. His neighbour had also come outside to see what was going on.

As if:Whistling:

Too easy that one:cool:

Me thinks you take things to literally, alot of if and maybes in that article. The whole of northern europe is in a period of isostatic rebound since the retreat of the greenland ice sheet some 8000 odd years ago, Milankovic roughly explained periods of glacial and inter galcial periods (25,000 to 100,000 year cycles) by envoking a series of wobbles in the earths axis, so I guess you are right global warming is to blame. however it is not a simple as more water = more stress on the earths crust. most of the major northern ice sheets are already floating.Regarding the strength of EQ’s. it entirely depends on duration and substraight to how serious it is in terms of damage, there are places in mexico in particular that are build in sand filled basins (we are talking 1000’s of Kms in width) that when a small quake hits the sand turns to liquid and the buildings sink even with low magnitude quakes. I dont think I have my head in the sand, I find it all funny that everything is to do with global warming, mayber it is, but the term global warming is a bllx one that is over applied.

Hark at Twiggy over there;):P:D

I’m in Reigate and would have slept through it had my parrot not got spooked and flown at warp speed accross the bedroom, headbutting the wall…

Had to sit with her for half an hour to calm her down.

Got into work this am and realised why she had acted so out of character.

No wonder you don’t come out much :stuck_out_tongue:

1st I was right thanks for that

2nd I can see your point of view global warming is called up as the reason for many things but in this case I think there is much more going on than we think.

The substrate has and is moving this we know the reasons for its moving are complex and linked to many issues, the motility of the magma and the underlying faults in the hardened crust (techtonic plates etc) etc etc The techtonic plates sometimes as we know move a few centimeteres suddenly because of many reasons causing the earthquake…as we all know there is a big one planned for the west coast of america very soon as the plates eventually part completely…bye bye san fancisco…

However the real issue is we just dont know what warming the planet up will do…and for sure this is what we are doing…my take and it is my take, my view is that we will see more and more freak weather and many other issues. I saw this 11 years ago when I installed a water tank underground (4500 litres) in my garden to cover me during the drought periods that are coming…I store my rain water ready for when there is non…there will be global continental movements and they will be on the increase, just think about 2 degrees of heat going into the earth and the amount of expansion that will cause…I think earthquakes are the start of it…we will see more than just this…

We have upset the planets balance and it is being ever so slowly, but in months not tens of years thrown into turmoil…it is not something that is going to happen it is happening now.

Just a few thoughts…could go on forever, but quantum physics is my biggest interest…a good chat about up down charm strange top and bottom…and we could really bore the pants off everyone…

I really shouldn’t laugh at that, but the scene it conjures up is fantastic.I hope she’s alright?

yeh felt it too sofa started moving lool NW london

I felt it, and only just clocked thats what it was…

table and bed shook, i had music on, and thought it was someone else in house bumping around. was kinda like the rumble you feel when a tube train travels underneath, only there arent any tubes near me!!

Think Ang will be swinging him round by his Camel toe when she see’s him ;)

I’m reading headlines this morning…having some breakfast prior to heading out to work…and read that a 4.7 earthquake struck England. WTF is that all about?!

I’m glad to read that you all are ok…

Well, MOST of you are ok. Global Warming is causing more earthquakes?! Come on man, step away from the Kool-Aid, eh? Take off the tin foil hat and rejoin the rest of rational thinking society, what do you say?

I say: Freedom of speech and opinion. They are both scientifically valid arguments in many respects. I just get annoyed when Politicians get hold of them and do some scaremongering…

First off, I agree with PPG. Freedom of speech is essential on these matters… So here’s my opinion…

Global warming is misinterpreted and used by the various governments to push new legislation on topics that would normally be difficult to push! Example: The local councils want to save money and administration by making the bin men empty your bins on a fortnightly basis… Suddenly it’s a case of “By emptying the bins on a fortnightly basis, we are forcing people to recycle more household waste, thereby reducing the damage to the planet!”… What actually happens is that the bin-bags start to mount up, to the point where you have no more room in the wheeley bin. At which point they start getting left on top of the bins, where foxes can jump! The next day, your bin area looks like someone has thrown a grenade into it, it stinks and you have to find a way to stop it from mounting up again! At this point, do you think the average person starts to recycle their waste? No, they steal their neighbors wheely bin!

After all of this has happened, and the bin-men have left half of the rubbish in your bin area (god forbid that they should actually have to pick bin-bags up!!!:w00t:) there are so many diseases growing in your bins that it is considered a health hazard!

And so, the global warming fiasco continues! It’s a little known fact that the ice shelves that are melting are being replaced by ice-shelves in other parts of the world. And of all the ice-shelves, only around 5% of them are measured to see what is happening to them! Do you not think that at the current rate of melting, certain areas of the world would be kind of underwater by now? The evidence is there for anyone to make an interpretation of what is happening. Sadly it seems like the majority of people would rather sit back and let other people do the thinking for them, then wander around blindly predicting that we are all going to die in droughts etc… How could there be massive droughts if we are all underwater anyway?;):P:w00t:

The fact is, yes global warming is happening! Just not the way the average person believes it is! When the romans were in Britain, they had vineyards in the northeast of England! The weather changes, dramatically sometimes, but that is what the planet does! It has had ice-ages, hot periods etc… And it will again!

Lastly, does anybody recall the huge problem with the depleting Ozone Layer? Remember how they predicted that even if we all stopped using CFC’s, it would still take anywhere between fifty and a hundred years for it to repair itself? Guess what? It has repaired itself in only 20 years! Didn’t hear that being shouted from the rooftops, did you?

And before everybody starts tearing my reply to pieces with government issued statements and facts, yes I do recycle, I do take my own bags to tesco’s and I do care about the environment. I just do it in my own way! And I don’t kick fluffy kittens etc…;):stuck_out_tongue:

Mate, much as I admire your wikipedia knowledge, there is no F’ing h in tectonic

ooh bit like your spelling of substraight…if it was wikipaedia I would have gotten the speling right wouldn’t I. doh…but didnt know it was a spelling lesson…as well as an aptitude test…and a breain cell test…so here is another thing for you…go and break up into your constituent parts and see what your really made of…how many hadrons and mesons make up your current mass…and see if it can be affected by global warming…and then tell me what wikipaedia say about that…

the good news is that you think my answer was so good it could have come from wikipaedia…am flattered thanks man…

That was mad!
I was drifting off last night went I thought that either I was having a conscious seizure or that some fkkr was shaking my bed (or that I had dreamt either of those events)!

When I turned on the TV, I was assured by a breakfast TV goon that it was ‘to do with teutonic’ plates!

Who would have thought that Germans stamping their feet could be felt this far away!
