Do you care about socket, or have you not got the board yet?
I presume amd64?
ebuyer is an option i use
ebay is usually ok for CPUs
Make sure you check exactly which CPUs your motherboard & bios supports.
im not sure which processors my motherboard accept, how do i find out?
you know your motherboard model and make? - Printed on the mainboard itself
If its a branded PC, the model and make of your pc?
Dell division 500 i believe
Dell Dimension 5000? We need to be exact. If you can get your Dell service tag (back of PC) then we can track it down exactly.
yeah 5000 an my service tag is 6JZ3H1J
p.s. thanks for all the help mate
Bored at werk…
You have a “DIMENSION 5000 P4 PROCESSOR 530 WITH HT” CPU at the moment
Which could be an intel P4 530 - http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27463&processor=530&spec-codes=SL79L,SL7E4,SL7J6,SL7KB,SL7KK,SL7PM,SL7PU,SL88J,SL8JZ,SL9CB
But cant be sure! So you need to run cpu-z to find out for sure. download it here - http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
If it is a P4 530 could be socket PLGA775 or PPGA478! so still dont know. cpu-z should tell us which socket u have then can choose a CPU. Alternatively phone Dell!
Gotta hate Dell!!!
thanks for the help mate its reeeeeeally confusing
and it says intel pentium 4 530 Socket 775 LGA
that the right bit?
socket 775, P4 530 - finally we got there!
Now after all that some bad news…
Without knowing the motherboard and dell BIOS there’s no simple upgrade for your CPU i know of. You’ll need to contact Dell and ask them straight up im afraid. ( This is cos your already on a 3GHz CPU and theres no major upgrade on that as architacture has changed rather than just CPU speed. And new architecture CPU prob means new motherboard…)
The other option is to upgrade motherboard and CPU together - your DDR2 memory still has life in it. So a motherboard & CPU bundle is prob the cheapest option. This is a £100+ job plus you have to rip the innards of your PC to shreds and start building it up again
So u need to be confident.
Option 3 is use your PC as a doorstop and get a new one which your looking at £250 min spend I expect…
Sorry there’s no simple option i know of.
From where have you got the requirement for a 2.4GHz+ two- or four-core chip?
Anything with a requirements list containing something so precise on speed but bizarreley vague on actual power (since there’s 50% variation in core count) is likely to have some other odd requirements. There’s no word on instruction set, do multi-core chips come in x86?
a game lol, many need dual core atm
i have no idea what im gna do lol, but basically the cheapest option is to buy a new motherboard and processor for about 100? then pay one of you 2 in petrol to sort it out for me
Dragon age?
operation flashpoint: dragon rising. so close lol. i reallyyyyyyy wna play it
im lookin for a new motherboard+processor omg its confusing! any chance for some help please? (angelic puppy eyes) im lookin for £100-£150
thank you!
boy you are needy!
ok
Make sure the new board will fit the case - no mean feat, but figure out if you have an ATX board and get an ATX compatible new board.
Make sure you have the same type of slots for your hard drive cables which could be IDE or SATA
Basically check the new board has at least the same types of slots as the old board!
Some dells don’t have ATX PSUs. It’s an ATX shape plug, but the power pins are different, and rather than being a momentary switch it’s continual.
EDIT: Though with a cpu change like that, and knowing how dell spec PSUs, I’d be surprised if you don’t need to upgrade it for more power anyway.
thanks for the help guys
Sure you don’t need to upgrade your GFX card too?
