DRZ stranded - clutch cable snapped!

Tony’s out on my DRZ at the moment, giving it a shake-down ride after doing some work on it and the clutch cable has just snapped! He’s stranded somewhere not a million miles away from West London Suzuki. What’s the bet that they’ll have a clutch cable in stock and be able to help him?

Fingers crossed, they’re checking stores now…

Do you need to clutch to push a gear? Has he any shoelaces? You’re not supposed to get stranded on these things!

He got it home, part ordered, fix being attempted. What a palaver!

Oh God! Why, oh why don’t you lame brains learn. After punctures and electrical failures, what’s the main reason for being stranded?

Carry spare inner cables and solderless nipples, a screwdriver and a pair of pliers. It all fits in a pocket or under the seat.

“Trialsbits” will sell you a a little can with a choice of cables and nipples that should keep you going. Once you have the idea, most scooter and bike shops will sell bits to add to the kit so you have the right bits when you need them.

You can’t guard against everything but I have no sympathy for people shooting them self in the foot for the dead simple things. (Not at all mechanical? If you have the spares the recovery service will fit them.)

For goodness sake get back in time and up to speed guys.

nice tip!

Nice tip, but, you sure as hell couldn’t get any of that under my BMW seat

Also, there is no under-seat on the DRZ, it’s like a rubber plank.

Hehehe

if you cant fit the under your seat cable tie them along the length of the existing lines, then they’re always there when you need them and it’s just a case of swapping ends over.

'tis a much better solution, and I used to do that “back in the days…”, but looks a bit untidy, can be a right bu88er to get around the head stock too, and is now an expensive option.

The spare inner cables/solderless nipples trick I got from a dispatch rider while changing over the clutch cables on my old BMW. The advantage with the spare inner cables is that you can change a clutch inner cable in about 5 minutes without much in the way of tools.

As for the “no room” excuse, sorry Jay , I don’t buy it. I bet you can always find room for your mobile?

The other advantage of carrying spares of course, is that all the while you do, you’ll never need them. (Page 32 of Sods Law.)

to be honest, you can ride it with no clutch. thats what i did when my clutch lever broke. only problem is finding neutral to stop and trying setting off at traffic lights (you end up doing wheelies if ur not careful). not fun
