driving licence expiry

how do

My photo licence expires later on this year, after being issued for 3 and a half years (maybe an odd time cos of my ban). Anyway, Ive looked on dvla/direct.gov.uk and cant find anything about it.

Do they just re-issue a new one when it expires or what. surely they aint going to make me do another test or anything?

thanks in advance

I think that they are issued in 7 year increments. My sister had a similar thing, moved house, paid for the new licence and it only lasts another 3 years or something.

You just have to apply for a new one, new photo etc… it should then be for 7 years.

It’s how they stripe us up further dont you know!

I’ve still got an old style paper licence:w00t:

Don’t the photo ones last til you are ancient like the old ones?

No they require updating every so often just like passports. I think it’s every 7 years, but that 7 years isnt extended everytime you have to change the details like address… oddly. If you have a paper one, hold on as long as you can. I would have done, but I moved house.I never carry any ID with me anyway.

As you say it’s just another way for Gordo to extort our hard earned eh?

I don’t think they expire.

After a panic check of mine and finding no date, I Googled and found this:

Your driving licence for categories A & B will last until you are 70, or for 3 years from date of issue whichever is the longer (i’ll be bold and assume that this will be your 70th birthday in your case) , however your photograph on your licence needs renewing every 10 years. Apparently there is no charge for this, however you do have to fill in form D1, and provide a photo endorsed by a responsible professional person who has known you personally for 2 years, much the same as a passport renewal… The renewal date for your licence entitlements is on the back of the photocard part of your licence, and the photograph renewal date is on the front.

I forgot to post this link

I know someone who has a paper license but can’t change it due to a lovely bit of Catch 22. They won’t issue a picture license without a) a birth certificate or passport in the appropriate name, and b) an endorsed photograph by someone who knows you as that person.

However her parents brought her up using a completely different name to the one on her birth certificate. They only broke it to her that her name was something else when she got married and needed a copy of her birth certificate and couldn’t trace it!

So no one knows her by the only name that they will issue a picture license in so she can’t get a picture endorsed. Ironically she doesn’t see why she should Deed Poll her name etc as she has a current paper license in the name she has been known by for the last four decades and the Government has employed her under that name for quarter of a century! The Government has been happy to accept her name and pay many tens of thousands of pounds of public money to her on the basis that she is who she is.

I am waiting for ID cards - she currently has birth certificate, passport and driving license in three different names. I think she should get three ID cards.

cheers for the info all, panic over.

The actual licence itself doesnt expire, ie the paper part of a a licence with a photo card (well it does expire but after approx 50 years (according to mine anyway)).The actual photo card has a valid from and to dates on the front eg mine is 18/2/05 - 17/10/11 (approx 7 years as this was when I had to change to the new photo licence from the old paper one). It’s like a passport, just requires updating every 7 years.

Sorry geeze, should have read your whole post! lol

Apparently there is an “administrative” charge.
