Drive Chains

Which one?!?
I need to replace my chain and sprockets. Its only for an XJ600 with power of about 50hp so I’m guessing it doesn’t need the top of the range part.

What have you got on your bike and any brands I should stay away from?

FWR in Kennington http://www.fwr.co.uk/chains.htm have recently fitted an AFAM chain and sprocket set to the Storm. From FWR’s website…

Special purchase. We have managed to get some top quality extra heavy duty Oring chain at a bargain price. We can offer kit for most bikes that take 520, 525 or 530 chain at the unrepeatable price of only £79.00 including sprockets with a 10,000 mile or 1 year guarantee. Limited quantity only available.

New line for FWR, AFAM chains are made to our exacting specifications by the world’s leading chain makers from Italy and Japan. Our close technical liaison with the chain manufacturers has enabled AFAM to offer chains of the highest quality for all motorcycle applications. AFAM chains will give total satisfaction and outstanding performance.

I’ve not used this brand before and it seems ok so far. FWR also give a great service. I was in and out within an hour.

It cost me £155 inc fitting, but your bike may not need as heavy duty a set as a 1000cc twin.

Give them a ring if you’re London based.

Generally you get what you pay for. So a top of the range part will (ideally) last far longer than a budget one and a super cheap one will probably be a false economy.

With chains the most important part is how you look after it.

I’d get a middle priced one and then with regular checking/adjustment and a scottoiler/lubing should last ages.

Cheers guys, ive been chatting with a mate of mine who restores old british bikes (proper fair weather rider, only coaxed him out once this year). He’s offered to show me how to fit it, so I just need to buy the sprokets and chain.

Donners, I might check out FWR. The price seems pretty good, otherwise I’ll pick up a decent set online.
