Don't be as stupid as I have been

Yesterday morning I have had to take an ambulance and rush to hospital, having lost the top of my right hand thumb, caught in the chain and sprocket.I know I have been stupid and paid the ultimate price.

This is how I did and and how you never must do:

Bike on the trackstand, spun the wheel by hand and sprayed grease on it. Then decided to wipe the excess with a thick towel, wrapped around my hand with the bike engine on, and in 1st gear on tickover, the towel got caught in the chain and my hand was pulled towards the sprocket and half of my thumb tip and bone got sheared off.

Please please never attempt this. I know I won’t ever again.

Oh lord, thats why i always do it with the engine off.

Same here. That must be a very painful lesson. I hope your finger will heal soon.

Blimey Fran!

Glad your okay.

Wow!
Thanks for the warning.
GWS!

Jesus, must have been bleeding like hell, thumb is the only finger with a small artery.
Hope you’re better now

Big ouch, we all learn by our mistakes.

OUCH!!! I do mine with the engine off!

Ouch!!! hope your thumb is on the mend.

You’re very lucky, a friend in the states sheared three complete fingers off that way. Hope that it heals quickly, and that the damage is minimal.

ouch yes the bit he has left…sorry to hear that bud…

Strewth

Ouch, gonna leave the engine off from now on…

OUCH MATE GLAD YOU ARE OK

Oh mate that’s horrible !
Hope you get better soon :pinch:

Yow. Hope you’re okay - and that the pain isn;t too bad. Next time I have the back wheel up with the bike idling I’ll be doing things very gingerly indeed!

Ouch!

Wasn’t there an LB member who did exactly the same thing last summer:pinch:

Praps we should make this a sticky;)

GWS mate

Cripes fella. Get well soon, least now you’ve got the props for show and tell when someone suggests doing that as the “quick easy option”

Must sting a bit eh…
